Reed was ready to check back in, but talked it out with Coach Blair and he sent him back to the bench. Clearly a malcontent.
Even if his shooting comes around, and it should, his weaknesses are still going to be a problem. He doesn't have the next level handle, feel or finishing ability to penetrate at the NBA level, he is tiny with mediocre lateral foot speed, and legitimately has poor defensive IQ right now - constantly wondering off-ball, always gravitates to the paint as if he's a shot blocking C or offensive rebound threat, closes out too hard, gets blown by and often gives up on even attempting to follow his player. He's young and I've been surprised by players development a number of times, some of his problems he'll be able to work through, but other make it seem likely that his upside could have relatively low cap on it. We'll see, but I won't be surprised if he's never a "good" starter.
I am starting to think that we are showcasing him in G-league as trade bait. Amen is a lock and we will go shopping for FVV replacement down the road. If we keep him, I am just as excited, I just don't see us with room for him to develop on our roster timeline over the next 2+ years. How do we feel about Reed and Tate for Ingram? It is Ingram's last year of his contract, so we would probably ask for a draft asset in return. I like Ingram and I am sure that he fits Ime's junkyard identity.
To me, RS shows good IQ and instincts, though he gambles on D far too often. The footspeed issue is a problem, and he needs to get used to NBA defensive rotations. And he'll get a little stronger. His shooting must be his calling card because that's his best skill.
I’m quite confident Reed is going to translate on the NBA level. And I maintain that he’s going to be a key piece going forward. It’s funny how many folks want to get out of his stock so soon lol.
I agree. He has all of the same positives and negatives of Young and Curry. He has a very high upside and is attractive to every NBA team.
Ingram is looking for a max contract. He isnt a 3 pt shooter he is a mid range shooter so he wont help spacing problems. I dont think he is an elite defender either not sure why you think he is better than our forward rotation.
Be like Cam and get 15 shots up in 7 minutes. No passive ****. “Just trying to fit in and make the right play.”
He has the ability to take over a game when on a team that is playing meaningful games. Just go back to the playoffs against the Suns. He almost knocked out the Suns all by himself that year. That was a very good Suns team. The contract max extension may be a problem unless Ime and Tilman are totally sold on Ingram's 3 year value (which I think that they could be). I think Ingram could make us a favorite to win the West for the next 3 seasons if he is completely bought in. Now that I am thinking about it, we might be able to get him for just Whitmore a future pick and Tate.
Never mind. We need a solid combo guard back up more than we need a SF. I just really like Ingram's complete makeup as a player. He's like a thugged out version of Tatum when he is on his game.
Reed's talents are legit. The shooting, IQ, vision, hands are all there. It's the G league obviously, but if you watched these games it was plain to see. You can also see that certain limitations are real. He can't create much space without a screen and he's slowed down (but not stopped) by aggressive ball pressure from bigger more athletic players. Some of the limitations will be resolved by learning to foul grift like Trae and Brunson. It's also clear he needs to be in an offense with constant screen setting for his gifts to shine. Same is true of Trae and Curry. I'm not completely sure though that he'll get that opportunity here. Playing him off-ball or as a backup PG in the typical Ime offense probably may not allow Reed to blossom, tbh. I think in the right situation (constant on-ball reps and screens) he definitely could - and I think other teams probably see that too.
