I would be on board with the term if these examples were as easy to find as you claim. Name a society that collapsed because of excess empathy?

When empathy is paired with critical thinking, it is highly likely to negate and outweigh any potential negative actions stemming from empathy.

My critique of the term “suicidal empathy” isn’t about shutting down discussion—it’s about how such language can stifle meaningful dialogue. Labeling empathy as “suicidal” introduces a loaded, emotional tone that risks dismissing empathy entirely, rather than critically examining the actions that results from it.

By linking empathy with “suicide” the term implies that caring for others is inherently irrational or dangerous. This framing can discourage people from embracing empathy, even though it is essential for understanding others and collaboratively solving problems.

Instead of using language that undermines empathy, we should focus on how it can be thoughtfully combined with critical thinking to drive better outcomes. Poorly considered actions deserve critique, but we must not lose sight of the transformative power empathy brings to our shared humanity.

Ultimately, empathy, when paired with critical thinking and open conversation, is the most effective approach to addressing issues. It helps us rise above primal fears, biases, and “us-versus-them” thinking to create solutions rooted in understanding and collaboration

Dumb dumb @AroundTheWorld would fall in category of unable to think in any way other than us-verses-them because he lacks the ability to do any of the above.

I agree with much of this. Empathy should be paired with critical thinking, like anything else. Some have argued that empathy itself can distort one’s ability to think rationally, because it is inherently emotion-based. Paul Bloom’s book Against Empathy makes this case, where he argues for “rational compassion” rather than “empathy” for effective moral action.

Agreed, but not sure you are understanding the take because pairing empathy with critical thinking would encompass rational compassion. Together the pairing helps temper emotional reaction inherent in empathy with a more measured and objective approach. Bloom's point is how do we balance the emotional aspect of empathy with the detached reasoning of critical thinking. It seems both are likely necessary, but they need to work in harmony to avoid the extremes of emotional over reaction or cold rationality/logic.

In the early 00's, I observed the word 'organic' beginning to take root in everyday language. It was predominately used by the left to describe their warped ways of thinking and to dismiss their illogical thought process. They took an obscure word and twisted it into their own definition. For example, an inefficient ran non-profit would describe their group as 'organic', when in reality they are a group of incompetent people who have no businesses running a non-profit and justify their incompetence as organic. This tactic eventually lead to illogical thought process often used to criticize people who disagreed with them. Now food corporations have adopted the term and jacked the price on food.

Over the last decade, I have observed a new buzzword among left leaning people. Empathy. And we have people in this thread trying to intertwine 'empathy' with critical thinking. Its so absurd and bizarre. Instead of properly using the word, much like 'organic', its instead being used to justify irrational thinking and gaslighting others for not adopting their highly illogical thought process.

Empathy has become a bullshit word and its best to avoid using it. Find some other way to describe it if you want to use it in its proper term.

Empathy can encompass rationality and pure emotional feeling, which reflects the reality of how humans operate and connect to each other. Some people are better at putting themselves in the place of others and do so out of habit in making moral decisions. This is one aspect of empathy. Some people are more strongly emotionally connected to the state of others, even when they aren’t immediate kin or close friends. Even when they are strangers. This is another aspect of empathy (I recall that Bloom argues in his book that this is the essential aspect of empathy).

I think what you’re saying is we should stop conflating these two things by using a common word “empathy” to describe both. Personally, I don’t think (for most of us) it’s possible to completely separate the two. Much of our “rational” choices stem from values that are intertwined strongly with emotional feelings. Pure reason isn’t sufficient for making moral choices effectively (which is why sociopaths have a difficult time with it).

Immigration without a plan, a religion that has a mixed message, and a lack of accountability, hurts proper discussion.

There are countless examples like this - not only in Germany, but all across Europe - same mindset of suicidal empathy as in the UK with the Pakistani gang rapes of hundreds of thousands of British girls.

This is the original case this is referring to - from a reputable news source.

Does your social media feed ever spam you cases of white Germans raping?

If you lived in 1920s Weimar Germany and they had microprocessors and social media back then your feed would just be spammed with every case of individual anecdotes of Jews stealing, raping, murdering etc.

Thanks. The article provides a few more details (the tweet doesn't mention that the attacker was ordered to pay 3000 euros to the victim). I have no idea if this is a normal sentence in that court for the crime committed, or if he got off easy due to "suicidal empathy".

You see the **** in UK with the rape gangs. It’s beyond shameful.
And the judges put the people in prison for trying to reveal it.

As a nation once you allow your females to be raped by invaders you have been conquered.

Huge cover up involving the current PM…
What is it with the left always covering for rapists and pedos?

If the rapists are ever brought to justice the sentences often seem pretty light.

Rape should get you something less than life but still several decades at least. Horrific crime.

If you are a war time commanding general, would empathy be a useful skill?

Do you also think this critique of a word usage like you are doing here applies to libertarian type people and their use of the word "freedom"? Have they possibly made that useless term with their uniquely horrible ways of utilizing the term "freedom"?
