Didn't think you would take it that way. I'm not upset at all. The conversation has just played out but I didn't want to ignore you.

It is not a wonder why his market has collapsed.

    Altuve vs Bregman
( I had to edit the math after my 1st time posting this)

projection of performance and regression over the course of the contracts. Based on Bregman's want of 7 yrs/$200M

    2024:
Jose 3.4 WAR at age 34
Alex 4.1 WAR at age 30

    2025:
    Jose 3.8* WAR @$25M
    Alex 4.1* WAR @$28.57

*I used the fangraphs projection "Steamer" that was highest for Jose. It happened to also be lowest for Alex

    2026:
    Jose 3.3**WAR @$25M
    Alex 3.7** WAR @$28.57

** I used standard 0.5 WAR per season regression due to age for Jose. I used 0.4 for Alex as his age, defense, and strike zone judgemental ( especially with incoming electronic system) keep his regression more gradual.

    2027:
    Jose 2.8 WAR @$25M
    Alex: 3.3 WAR @$28.57M

    2028:
    Jose 2.3 WAR @$25M
    Alex 2.9 WAR @$28.57M

    2029:
    Jose 1.8 WAR @$25M
    Alex 2.5 WAR @$28.57M

    Jose: 14.0 WAR = $8.93M / WAR

    2030:
    Alex 2.1 WAR @$28.57M

    2031:
    Alex 1.7 WAR @$28.57M

    Alex: 20.3 WAR = $9.85M / WAR

    My opinion:

Neither are good contracts, in a vacuum. $$/WAR needs to be under $8M for it to be a good contract.

Neither are bad contracts, in a vacuum. $$/WAR needs to he over $10M for it to be a bad contract.

For the Astros, and only the Astros, the off the field benefits add to the value of these deals and make them both positives. Altuve is the face of the organization and making a run toward Cooperstown. Bregman brings a ton of intangibles and helps the performance of others and game planning.

A case can be made that Alex brings those same issues to another team as well, but there is no way of knowing how a new organization operates or how much they will use him/allow him to improve the team behind the scenes.

I think any team besides the Astros needs to keep the deal under $182 to expect it to be a positive investment. That gets the $$/WAR down to $9M and splits the difference between a good and bad contract.

The 1 extra year makes a huge difference.
    FWIW: Astros 6/$156M offer = $8.39M/WAR

I still don't blame Alex for wanting the 7th year, but I now agree that the Astros offer was, indeed, fair.

    I happen to agree

But don't see any positives here unless Crane still values Reggie's opinion and starts him thinking.

Reggie is still Reggie and Crane still loves his HOFers

Curious Reggie saying this knowing they've traded for Paredes and signed Walker.

A little too late - it’s done. These sour grapes are ridiculous. When you make the decision to fleece the home team you aren’t really an Astro “through and through.” You’re just trying to get the biggest bag and epically misread (Boras bluffed) the market.

Side one - Every negotiation is about Greedy Owners not wanting to give players what they deserve.

Side two - Every negotiation is about Greedy Players demanding MORE than they are worth and spitting into the face of the fans who love them.

I'll take Side three - Fans can't afford to care anymore.

His OPS+ has averaged 124 over the past three years and has never been below 118. That’s literally means he’s been 24% better than average.

I’m not advocating for paying him as an all star for 7 years, but he’s projected to be well above average next year and however you are defining his “clutchness” won’t affect his contract.

He's the one that screwed up the Astros approach to hitting IMO

Biggest fear with bregman is the injuries and his defense .

He gets alot of his value from being a good defender . If that slips more and more he doesn't provide the value with the bat alone .... Unless he gets into a time chamber or something .

He is young enough to have a few more great seasons but hasn’t been the same since 2019.

    Stick. Him. At. Left.

Can't be worse than Chas. And they have been open about willing to do do a position change. Just never said where.
