Deputies search home of Blazers' Qyntel Woods

04:10 PM PDT on Monday, October 11, 2004

By KGW Staff and Wire Reports

LAKE OSWEGO -- Clackamas County Sheriff's deputies were searching the home of Trail Blazers forward Qyntel Woods on Monday, following allegations that he had abandoned a pit bull because it would not fight for him.

Qyntel Woods talks to reporters at practice.
Dog fighting is a felony in Oregon.

"The only thing I can say is that we are conducting a search," said Joel Manley, a public information officer with the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies remained at the home during the noon hour, with their search for possible evidence of animal abuse lasting several hours.

Trail Blazers spokesman Mike Hanson said Monday that he hadn't yet been informed about the search at Woods' home.

This is the pit bull that is being cared for at an animal shelter during the investigation.

"We have said from the beginning, we take this seriously," he said. "This is the first I am hearing of this particular piece. I will have to look into it."

The 23-year-old Woods was apparently at a Blazers practice while the search was being conducted.

While authorities think Woods may have abandoned the dog, the Blazer player said he had simply given the pit bull away.

However, authorities said the dog was found with wounds all over its body.

Kathy Covey, a spokeswoman for the Oregon Humane Society, said the organization co-served the search warrant because of, "probable cause to believe there is evidence here in the home that relates to the crime of dog-fighting, or participation in dog-fighting. They are looking for evidence to collect that would be consistent with these crimes."

Covey said she could not comment on what the search may have yielded so far.

Woods has had other run-ins with law enforcement; he's previously been cited on mar1juana possession charges and for driving with a suspended driver's license.

Now they're looking into drug charges according to the latest video on the site. The police smelled mar1juana as soon as they walked into the house.

They're also "Trail" so maybe they should also be a tasty assortment of nuts and dried fruit.

Actually, thanks to Steve Patterson, the Jailblazers are not back at it. They have suspended Qyntel already and will most probably either trade or flat out cut him.

Steve is a stand up guy and will help them get back to a classy organization. His actions with Woods will set a precedent for the team to follow. No more boneheaded idiots running amock.

why do i sometimes think that all the problems with the blazers has more to do with the mentality of the locals than the actual players?

maybe because oregon has a reputation?

well, so do nba players (drugs)... which makes it that much more suspicious when such a disproportionate amount of the reports are out of portland...

Anyone that participates in dog fighting deserves to be shot.
