What would be your criteria for making a 51st State?

If we were to make a purchase like Greenland
Would you like it to be a state?
    Why or Why not?

Are we just dead set on a nice round number like 50?
(Could you see a time or instance were some place could *lose* statehood???)

I don't understand the reason . . why not give them statehood?
I feel the same about Puerta Rico.

What is the point of keeping Territories as non-states?
The United States has 14 territories that are administered by the US but not claimed by any of the 50 US states

    • Permanently inhabited territories: American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands
    • Uninhabited territories: Nine territories are uninhabited
    • Unorganized territories: 11 territories are unorganized, including Baker Island, Howland Island, Jarvis Island, Johnston Atoll, Kingman Reef, Wake Island, Midway Islands, Navassa Island, Seranilla Bank, and Bajo Nuevo Bank
Now to google what does it mean to be an Unorganized Territory?
An unorganized territory is a part of a county in a state with minor civil divisions that is not part of any minor civil division. The United States Census Bureau recognizes unorganized territories as separate counties, and they are given a descriptive name followed by the designation "unorganized territory"

Some of these unorganized territories IMO would not qualify for much of anything

My main criteria for making a 51st state would have to have assurances that they move the Cowboys snd Rangers to said state

For 51st, split Virginia in half... to two states.

Then we'd have East Virginia, West Virginia and Vanilla-ginia,

    Balance it out.

Is New York still New, it's been around for a while, one of the oldest states in the Union. Can we rename New York to just York (or Old York).

    York and Upstate.

DC and Puerto Rico have more people than Wyoming, so they should be in and should get 2 senators each.

Average congressional district has a population of 761,169. Puerto Rico has a population of 3.3 million, so they should have 4 congressional house seats.

Hard to argue with using population as a guide to awarding statehood and house seats (even in the absence of statehood).

Can we just call the DFW area ‘upstate Texas’? It’s not ****ing anywhere close to being the northern part of the state.

U.S. territories can go through the legislative process to apply for statehood just like every other U.S. territory before them did…

I saw something during the lockdown about DC having the potential to cause constitutional crises as a state. It's pretty specific what the territory can and can't do with Congress holding authority over those decisions. Maryland also has first dibs.

We'd need an amendment for statehood to fix all of that.

As for Puerto Rico, we've treated that island like a one-off dog house. I'd be okay if they declared independence and we resolved most of their predatory debts they cosigned with us. Ofc that won't resolve poor local governance but we have plenty of southern states that have the same issues...

Puerto Rico has voted for statehood 7 times. 4 times since 2012. The vote is non-binding though because the US Congress has to create and vote on a bill.

It’s Republicans that have held up statehood in the past to keep in power by not adding Senate and House seats that have any chance to be Democratic or swing seats.

There’s no reason to lie about that fact and Trump in his tweets saying we should purchase Greenland as a territory only is funny that he’s so cowardly about it. If you think these people you are bringing in are so happy to be annexed by you why wouldn’t they vote for you?

I don’t know why Republicans are so afraid of making new states… it’s almost as if they know their positions are unpopular.
