Bregman’s declining numbers do not support a 7/200 contract.

He should’ve taken the overpay the Astros offered.

I expect Breggy's slugging numbers to take a huge dip at Comerica Park.

Glancing over Bregmans stats last year, I was shocked to see on my 44 walks

He was trying to hit for a new contract. Ended up hurting him. So many soft outs last year. I know he hit .260 but the pop ups and weak grounders with dudes on base never stopped. It was frustrating to watch.

Players shouldn't get paid more as they age into their 30s in baseball. In fact, they should get paid less. He's being rewarded for all that he's done to this point but by the wrong team. Sure...they can say it's for how he's going to play going forward but he's an aging player who probably isn't getting better at this point. It's one thing if we paid him all that money because he did all this great stuff for us in a dynasty run prior as we could hang our hat a little on that if he underperforms his new contract. On the flip side...it could work out with his new team. He has a particular set of skills. He will find some success. But, will he be worth the money? Good luck. (yes...that was the "Taken" Liam Neeson speech for Breg)

It's a great park for doubles, if he decided to get back to that approach

He needs to. He is not a homerun hitter. I’d offer him 4 years 100m take it or leave it by next Saturday.

Instead of trying for 30 HRs, why not hit 50 2Bs?

I'm really surprised we offered 6/$156 million.

That would have been a tragic contract for us.

Like someone said 4/$100 million appears to be fair.

Everyone on here knows how I feel about Alex and bringing him back.

That said, let me add that I am thrilled to cheer for Paredes and Walker for the next 3 years. The 1b/3b situation could not have been handled better by Brown, in my opinion.

However, if Alex had accepted the 6 yr offer (I'm pretty sure they raised it beyond $256M) I would be equally excited.

To say Alex agreeing to the offer woukd have been "tragic" is likely very far from the truth.

As a general rule, FAs try to get about $10M per expected WAR. Teams try to get players to agree to $8M or less. Over $10M per WAR is a bad contract. IMO, that makes about $13M per WAR "tragic"

At $156M, that is between15.6-19.5 WAR.

Alex is betting he gets over 19.5 and at $10M per, that the $200M he wants.

The Astros are saying they are pretty confident he gets at least 15.6 but don't feel he gets over 19.5.

Alex would need to get less than 12 WAR for the cost of that deal to exceed $13M per.

    My projection:
    2025: 4.1 (also Steamer's)
    2026: 3.7
    2027: 3.3
    2028: 2.9
    2029: 2.5
    2030: 2.1. = 18.6 in 6 years
    3031: 1.7 = 20.3 in 7 years

    6 yr= $148.8-$186M value / "Tragic" = $241M+
    7 yrs= $162.4-$203M value/ "Tragic" = $263M+

This is a fair contract for a team that doesn't want to take on what I call 2-3 loyalty years. They've already signed Altuve to a contract like this. Signing two guys like this would prevent the team from competing for championships in the future IMHO.

Unless the player is still playable.

In year 7 of any new contract, Alex will be 37.

He probably is no longer a 4 or even 3 WAR player, but it's a pretty solid bet that he will be a 2+ WAR player and if that's the case there would be no problem playing him.

No way he’s putting up 2 war in four years. Much less 6.

34 isn’t exactly old man territory. Altuve puts up more than that at 34. So does Walker. Greg’s has never been below 4 in a full season. 2 WAR s a really low bar to clear, it’s hardly star numbers.
