And hitters get paid to hit mistakes… that comment was more to poke fun at those splay chart projections that featured outcomes that likely took park dimensions and the opposing pitcher into account.
All good hitters are mistake hitters, that's what makes them good hitters. The key is to not miss the mistakes, or watch them go by. It's real hard to hit pitcher's pitches, because good pitchers are good at pitching.
Yes, I meant my comment to basically reflect what you said... just not as succinctly. Not all hitters can predict or hit the mistakes, and that's a separator. To take it one step further, the best hitters actually have the ability to "set pitchers up" either later in the same AB, but more likely later in the same game based on some questionable takes or questionable swings. Altuve does this... even if he's "happy-go-lucky" and just seems to be a happy kid out there loving the game... he's got the blessed gift of the memory-bank brain and he's constantly cataloging pitches, locations, other hitters' AB's... like a sponge. (and then he gets on the base paths...)
Paredes hits mistakes. Like Kingman. There are hitters who make a living off mistakes and can’t hit too much else. Paredes is one of those. Then there are hitters who hit mistakes and good pitches. Paredes is not one of those. He certainly isnt a hitter that forces mistakes with his uncanny intelligence at the plate. Maybe with more seasoning. There is a reason the term “mistake hitter” exists.
Which variety? "Pigeon S!!t", ie statue covered in or Old Man at the Beach, watching things go by and saying to himself "I'd hit that"?
That latter category of hitters are called HOF's or multiple AS at the least. And no, Paredes is not one of those. But the Dave Kingman comparison is fun though. Through 5 years or so Rob Deer and others would have worked too.
Paredes doesn’t strike out like those guys… but I’ll just say that Vinny Castilla, Dave Kingman, Greg Vaughn and Mark Reynolds were all “mistake” hitters that looked for a single pitch… and all of them in their prime had some monster seasons…. Paredes will be fine. If he sells out for power he is like Tony Bautista.
Yes but almost all very hitter is a mistake hitter. He also doesn’t really strikeout a lot - he gets out a lot of times from making mediocre contact on pitches inside under his hands.
Looking for and hitting a pitch in one place is very different than looking for a certain pitch, if that makes any sense. The only thing I'm really worried/curious about with Paredes is defense at 3B
Isaac Paredes a Mexican 3B has to be a Vinny Castilla Fan. Former Astro 3B. Same Style of hitting and fielding.
Is it false hope to think there’s still some untapped upside? He was great in 2023 and very good first half of last year and still just 25.
