Part of it is he’s an awesome defender, which ime likes (duh). Putting complete trash on defense in his place isn’t worth it unless it’s a massive upgrade, which those guys aren’t. Really depends on how much he wants though.
Has Jones really declined so badly on D? I only watch Rockets games these days. Brogdon used to be fairly competent on D too.
Brogdon will be 33 next season and is always injured, i don’t really count him as a relevant player. If jones played defense he probably would’ve gotten way more money i imagine, but i’m not opposed to him as a stop gap.
You are overrating FVV's defense. Yeah he is a good defender, but at the end of the day he is 6'1 and a midget, he is too small to be an effective defender besides to other small guards. Secondly his defense starts deteriorating due to the large minutes he plays, he knows he will have to play 39 mpg so he starts conserving his energy. Finally pg is the one spot you can hide bad defenders and still have a good defensive team. Players like Tyus Jones were part of a top 10 NBA defense a couple years ago in Memphis.
I'm 100% off the trade for Fox train at this point unless it's a 1:1 FVV swap with only a 25' pick attached. Why? Because TWolves are completely imploding this season and they are in cap hell with no way to improve the roster since they traded all their picks to the Jazz. We play the Wolves on the 27th and that will be a must win game for us. We want to add all the misery we can to that team so the chances of Anthony Edwards asking out is higher. We also have the best package in the league if Ant asks out this season. Speak it into existence.
I like the idea of upgrading to Fox at PG but it’s just insane what people are proposing that the Rockets should just nonchalantly be adding in the trade package. I would trade FVV and one good asset. Either Reed, Cam, or a first round pick. Not ALL of our trade assets. Freaking insane. Fox isn’t 90’s Jordan folks. He’s good but not going to carry you to a title single handily. You are gonna need those assets to continue to build and make more trades if we are serious about contenting and not just serious about making the playoffs for one year.
Stone is tight lipped as they come and as the good company man, I don't know anything yet about even role player recruitment lmao.
If Fox wants out (looking more and more likely), Sac will not be in the cat bird seat. I keep thinking of Bradley Beal in WSH....
How much better does Fox make the rockets? The team is currently sitting at 2nd in the west. Does he move us to 1st? Does he guarantee a western conference finals appearance? I think this is a playoff team with home court advantage and likely a 2nd round exit with or without Fox. What are you giving up assets for if that's the case? I think you only trade a bunch of assets for someone who is a true superstar or a star level scorer that makes up for a our main weaknesses. Or, you just continue to move forward developing the young guys, drafting well, and keep vets on manageable contracts. It seems to be working so far.
I don't think he makes us much better at all, our titles odds are 0% with our without him, and next season will be 0% with or without him. He doesn't move the needle. He's played all 30 games this season, has a decent coach, and sabonis has been good and yet his team sucks, because he's not that guy.
I guarantee you they are not for Stone. My guess is he views Reed equivalent of a future unprotected 1st and Cam as a top 14 projected future pick in terms of value. FVV also is no throwaway in terms of his contract and very low dropoff in short term performance this year on the court. IMO the Spurs are positioned to overpay where the Rockets aren’t because Wemby is basically a win now star and given his size he’s way more injury prone than your average star. The Spurs are not dumb enough to assume he will be healthy for 8 more years straight. The Rockets and Stone just aren’t that desperate…. Or they shouldn’t be. Why throw basically all your chips in on a borderline star (albeit a perfect fit for this team) when you could keep all your chips and just keep playing the long game with a roster that obviously should make the playoffs as is for the next 5 seasons?? The Spurs are going to overpay… let them bet it all on black and yourself keep playing the spread on the table.
Could Fox tank his own trade value by saying he wont sign an extension with a team if he doesn’t really want to go there? Might be hard for the Kings to get a best offer if there are teams he makes known he will not extend with.
