Don't need 3 starting corner IFs. Spend that money elsewhere.

I'm rooting for him to go to the Tigers.

The whole “cost of living” thing is an argument that doesn’t make any sense given the scale of these salaries. The cost of groceries or gas doesn’t factor into any pro athlete’s bottom line. Those are numbers that mean something to us but not to them.

Also IIRC MLB players pay taxes where they are earned...ie games in Cali = Cali taxes, etc...

I have no idea how/what contract language says to mitigate this

Being an accountant sounds boring as hell, but being a sports accountant sounds interesting

    Yes, this is correct.

Being a sports accountant isn’t any different than any other accountant. Having to file returns in all of the states isn’t fun lol

Ohtani was smart to defer his money so he didn't get hit hard by California. They can give the money to him after he retires and moves back to Japan. It's a great way to get around the California state income tax.

It’s not contractual - it’s just the tax law. Everyone, not just athletes, owes tax wherever they work for any portion of the year. For most people, the amounts are tiny so employers and states don’t bother enforcing it. Obviously at professional athlete salary levels and travel visibility, they can’t ignore it so must file everywhere they play (high-travel, high-earning executives file in many states also).

The taxable amount for everyone is the pay they took home that year. If you defer salary, you defer the taxes. It’s really that simple - any employer can offer the same to their employees (and in fact many large corporations do offer deferred salary to senior executives … as an aside, the ways rich people can defer or cut taxes is massive and will certainly increase a LOT these next four years while people are distracted by manufactured anger).

Summary - nothing special in the contract except a payment schedule.

I was talking/thinking about deferred money and signing bonuses, when and where are they earned?

Sorry, I thought I did answer that. Earned when paid, taxed where you live when paid.

I wonder what the market really is for Bregman and if Boras would allow this to become another Jordan Montgomery situation. Maybe the Astros still have a chance.

Till he signs w (who Detroit?) Or elsewhere we gotta shot at heem. For very affordable contract perhaps the Boras magic is fading away off into the sunset ✨️.

Well, Boras has still had one hell of an offseason.

I haven't looked but there is no way that's it's not a record for total guarantee for his clients and total commissions earned.

Well seems a lot of teams have spent their money this offseason. Bregman had been expected to have been signed soon after the Soto signing; at least that’s what I had read from a few places.

Him not being signed yet makes you wonder if he’s priced himself outside of the market?

Keutchel and Correa were fellas that believed there was a stronger market for them than what was actually out there. Proving the Astros were offering contracts in good faith and not trying to swindle said players.

Even by trading Tucker, the Astros seem to have done that in good faith, because they knew there was no way they were going to offer what the market says should be a bare minimum for a player of his status. Seem The Astros are not going to trick their players into taking less, they offer what they feel if fair value. And if it becomes apparent that they aren’t in the same neighborhood in terms of contract figures they stop the pursuit.

That’s years away but supposedly he has said he doesn’t plan to retire to Japan. One of his old teammates said Ohtani always talked about retiring to some huge plot of land in Montana/Idaho or Pacific Northwest where he would fish, live with his dogs and wife and kids.
