    That’s just silly

You’re assuming Astros can’t make any other moves to reduce salary between now and the off-season

If they move Ryan Presley $16 million salary they could easily add a $10-$15 million a year player they could also structure the deal where it has a smaller salary and much bigger salary moving on when more money comes off the book next year

It doesn't work that way for luxury tax purposes.

I agree. I'm betting they sign or trade for a starting OF. They are too close to being strong WS contenders to go into the season with a McCormick, Myers, Dicenzo outfield. It can be a rental like Martes with the money that will be freed up next year.

I don’t believe that. They may not make any big moves on par with Walker/Paredes, but they will acquire an outfielder before opening day. It might be somebody like Alex Verdugo or even Jason Heyward, but they’re not going into opening day with McCormick/Dubon/Meyers/Dezenzo/Trammell as their OF

Accept the fact we're locking down Bregs....
He & Altuve been the next best to HPD in locking down corners.

Still not sure why Crane hasn't said MerryChristmas to Bregman & his fam & the fanbasae... bc thats whats up

    We all see it.

Please explain how it doesn’t work that way….

because the luxury tax penalty isn’t calculated till the end of the season. And what I was talking about was making a trade prior to the season even starting, so there’s absolutely no scenario where what I suggested doesn’t work…

Because the luxury tax is calculated based on average AAV, not cash disbursements. Go look at the part I bolded in your comment where you were suggesting trying to backload the contract so this year's hit would be less.

I don't see him necessarily playing out his current contract. He is likely to retire if it becomes apparent he is no longer able to contribute positively. He is not going to allow himself to be a hanger on.

Don’t half-ass being in contention, or rebuilding. If you are keeping Valdez, sign another outfielder. Maybe they want to move Presley and, or Caratini first. Anyway, I like the Astros moves so far this year.

That's like 12 million in savings.

Not sure that gets you a great player...

    Move Pressly too maybe...

Joc Pederson to get a lefty in the lineup would not be a bad option.

I would prefer someone who could actually play defense rather than be stuck as DH.

Jesse Winker is a better option.

But I would really prefer they trade for Brandon Lowe.

Walker and the new 3b coach can recruit him lol. How's his defense? Who's better, him or Winkler? Who would cost more? I want Winkler. Seems like he would bring energy.

And Vegas currently has us as the 2nd shortest odds to win the AL after the Yankees. Current wins O/U total is at 87.5.

Yet we have people in here seriously saying stupid **** like “why even watch this team” and “this is a 75 win team”…

Joc is the definition of a high energy guy. They are both terrible defenders but Joc is a better hitter so he will cost more.

Why would you trade Caratini and who would you replace him with?

In 2024, Pederson played 120 games at DH and 0 in the field.

In 2023 he played 79 at DH and 37 in the OF.
He handled 78% of his chances and baseball savant says an average OF should have handled 86%. His range was negative 3.7 ft vs avg.

In 2024, Winker played 92 games in the OF and 44 at DH. He handled 79% of his chances and baseball savant says an average OF should have handled 86%. His range was negative 3.5 ft vs avg.

Neither are great in the field, but at least Winker still plays there.
