I'm early but I think someone to look to blow up in 2025 is Josh Johnson He is putting out consistent material Building a nice Brand Rocket River
I don't get into that much Comedy beyond Chapelle and Chris Rock but I have seen Nate Bargatze on a special and he is really funny.....he has an SNL skit where he explains how things will be done in the US that is awesome
This guy is on the Daily Show and usually really funny…but it was taking far too long to get to the Marty story punch line and I peaced out.
I generally grab his shorts You are correct he can meander a bit He is also dumping alot of content. He basically doing new material every other day Rocket River
I was going to say the same- once it’s 90 seconds in and he hasn’t told the actual joke yet, he kinda lost me
I guess we need a definition of ‘Modern’ BB was born in the 1960s and has been doing standup since the early 90s. Not what I’d call a fresh face. Sort of like saying Buick makes modern cars because they still make cars. /shrug
I liked him. He came up with that bit pretty fast too. The news isn't that old. And he had that lengthy story down pat. That's somewhat impressive. So while it was a long comedy bit, the fact he already wrote the bit and has it down pretty good is talent. I also liked that even with the long story, he had the audience on a string until he delivered the comedy. Obviously, that did not work for everyone, but it worked for me.
There's this undertone of smugness in Josh's style of comedy that kills the vibe of comedy for me. Some newer specials / sets accessible on YT On Netflix Shane Gillis and Mark Normand are great. Modern comedy can be tough because it's like over 50% covid, trans, and crowd work, most comics focus on the hot topics of the times and todays topics are pretty centralized with social media I guess, but there are some unique perspectives that still make me laugh.
I think he’s moderately funny. I just wouldn’t think of him as ‘Modern’. If someone gave me a new Buick or Lincoln, I’m sure I would enjoy driving them to an extent, but I would never say they were modern. Most forms of comedy are tied to pop culture, and older people are prone to stick with the things they know and love. I wish I had a power mullet. Toyota has stayed very relevant and fresh…but that may just be my old ass giving it a pass because the vehicles are so damn reliable.
