There are a lot of AAAA players. More than there are AAA players that have success in the big leagues.
Adding the cubs to this since they appear to be looking for a tor p: Cubs: OF Owen Caissie, IF James Triantos, OF Cody Bellinger
I still think another trade w/ the Cubs makes tons of sense and Bellinger is an even better fit today than he was yesterday. Brown needs to force the issue before he goes to the Yankees. I want Framber in the NL and I want him to bring back a legitimate, above average MLB OF and prospects that slide into Astros top 5.
@Snake Diggit how much value do you think Hader has if Crane is willing to eat 40-50 million of that contract ? There's no reason he can't? If we trade away Framber and don't resign Bregs we have a ton of cap space
I think Hader’s contract has a small amount of surplus value as it is. He was still one of the best closers in the game last season and he’s still only 30 so if he were on the open market in this seller’s offseason I think he could probably match or slightly beat the $76M/4yrs the Astros owe him; I’d peg him for somewhere between $70M/4yrs and $110M/5yrs if he were a free agent. So essentially whatever Crane were willing to pay down, that’s roughly how much value they could expect back via trade. But I would be utterly shocked if Crane signed off on trading Hader.
The time to trade Hader is next offseason if the retool this offseason doesn’t look promising. As you said- his contract is probably a net wash (unless he’s cooked which seems unlikely) but you just throw in however much money you want for prospect value. I’d spend 30M and look for a guy around 50th and around 100th on the prospect lists. If you made that decision you’d also be trading pretty much everyone other than Altuve. Which- if the retool this offseason doesn’t work makes sense. Punt and regroup to start opening the window in 28 or something.
This makes no sense. The only reason Crane would eat so much money is because they need the cap space. Crane specifically ordered Brown to get Hader by name. billionaires have egos. absolutely no way Crane allows Brown to trade Hader, much less pays to allow for it. Espada and the Astros screwed Hader last year in the way they used him. ( Now Hader much pitch better too). Relievers are notoriously inconsistent year to year. I have every expectation that he will have a great season. And if I were to give odds, I think its more likely that Yordan gets traded than Hader. Alvarez, maybe 0.001% chance Hader, maybe 0.000000001% chance. And it has nothing to do with trade value.
Can you imagine how much Yordan would fetch in trade next offseason (with 3 full seasons of control remaining at a bargain basement price) if he had a year like 2022?
Ok show us some possible hauls? Gotta first realize how few teams can affor him, correct? Lad nyy nym sdp. Thats about all of em? What prospects any of em have for us?
I can’t even really begin to put together packages for a year from now. But it would be multiple MLB Top 30 prospects and/or established young above average everyday major leaguers. Yordan is not that well paid. Any team trying to contend who has that level of young talent to trade would be in the mix. Brewers, Cubs, Dodgers, Mets, Orioles, Phillies, Red Sox, Tigers, and Yankees would all be able to put together a package. Off the cuff, Yordan to the Red Sox for Marcelo Mayer and Kristan Campbell plus another decent young player would be something close to what I’d be looking for. Boston would love Yordan because he’s basically a cooler calmer version of David Ortiz.
You would get a better haul than the what the Padres got for Soto for Yordan. That being said, I want to keep him sooo bad. He is like Altuve to me. I really want him to be an Astros lifer.
If the team were to trade Yordan, then there would be no way to avoid some form of reduced results and a rebuild. Yes he would bring in, at least 3 very good pieces, but the chances are at least 1 of those would disappoint and they likely need a year or two to establish themselves. Also, if he is traded, then B Abreu, Diaz, Pena, and Brown need to be traded as well. This would not happen until at least next offseason, and even a 1-2 year rebuild puts us right against their free agency so their arbitration seasons would be wasted. Might as well rip the band aid off. But 2027 would be exciting and if done right. 2028-2031, maybe longer, would be a 2nd Golden Era.
I know prospecterbation is a favorite pastime for many, but no thank you on a proper rebuild until that gun is firmly to our head. Rebuilds rarely turn into a true sustained contender, generally you are able to open up a little window here or there in even good scenarios. We currently still have a little window, so I'm not giving that up just to "hope" that we can be this good again in a few years.
For the record I agree with you. Until something significant changes, the Astros best move is to try to contend while Altuve and Alvarez are still productive.
Depends on who's doing the rebuild and Luhnow isn't waliking into the doors down on Crawford this time around.
