When it says Cam Smith is "in play" it better mean he's included. If we get Paredes and some junk without Smith then I'm going to be pissed.
Can someone explain to me why the 'Stros are about to trade Kyle Tucker before knowing where Breg the Mang is going to land?
This is a decent trade and certainly improves Houston’s outlook for 2026 and beyond. They probably are down only 1-2 wins in 2025 if you factor in the freed up payroll. They also now have a glut of starting pitching to trade from.
Signing Bregman obliterates part of this train of thought...but having to fill holes at all corners of IF/OF is not a great position to be in. Will take some some serious GM Voodoo, and it won't all be fixed with just one transaction.
Those deals should be completely independent of each other. Trading Tucker is a good move regardless of whether you're looking to compete or not.
Smith is an excellent prospect who is easily Houston’s best prospect now. Wesneski was a fringe Top 100 pitching prospect in 2023 who hasn’t really panned out but you gotta give the Astros the benefit of the doubt when it comes to pitchers they acquire.
Paredes can play 2B and 1B, even if Bregman is back Paredes has a spot. Although, I'm pretty sure the front office knows whats happening with Bregman, even if it's not public yet.
Wesneski feels like a classic Astros project future MOR starter. Fangraphs had him #120 overall in 2023 and noted Chicago moved him to long relief due to struggling. They absolutely must move Framber for MLB OF help but this is a good return
Brice Matthews has a looooong way to go to be a legit major leaguer. Strikes out entirely too much. Hope the best for him but I would pencil in two or three other guys before him right now.
Bregman wants to see a long term commitment to winning when deciding where to sign. This trade saves about $10-12M
