As of last year, Bobby still gettin paid. I complain about Crane not dropping dollars when needed but the Soto contract is ridiculous.......15 friggin years, I would not want Crane to do anything close to that, I like the sweet spot of 6-8 years max, but I get it, the owner of the Mets is a multi-billionaire, but I wonder how this will age....................that's a lot of cheese for ONE guy
For these guys it's about the big splash, the big draw. The Mets stealing a Hall-of-Famer from the crosstown rivals. It's all fake money to these guys. You just have to wonder if the inflation goes down the line or not. The 1 year, $17m for Conforto felt like an underpriced signing.
Why does it matter? If Soto is making $55M while hitting like 2024 Jose Abreu in 2038, but the Mets bring in 2 more studs and end up with the highest payroll and lead the league in runs scored, then why does it even matter to fans?
With Crane not willing to spend like the big boys, does any of this really matter? If we had Luhnow still, I'd be ready to start over. Edit- and not willing to spend to correct his own bad signings...
Tell me how Dana can sign players to cost controlled contracts in this market. BTW, I don't think the minors are as bad as you do. You must be reading this national press.
How would you feel if they traded for Robert, Casas and signed a stop gap 3B until Matthews was ready say at the all star break? They're going to put Dezenzo in LF this year. I would sign Gamel as a reserve. As long as they have pitching they should never throw in the towel. This would also allow them to be players in the 2026 fa market
Again, a lot of doom and gloom. For those assuming the run is over and the farm is barren: Yordan Alvarez was fangraphs #125 overall prospect going into the season he got called up. He was acquired for a fringey RP. Kyle Tucker posted a wRC+ of 28 in his MLB debut. Jose Altuve signed for $10k and was never a Top 100 prospect. He was a middling fringey regular his first 2.5 seasons. Jeremy Pena was a 3rd rd pick. Yainer Diaz was a non-bonus lower level prospect who was acquired for a fringey CF and wasn’t even the main piece of the trade. Framber Valdez was a non-bonus int’l signee who was Houston’s #22 prospect when he graduated in 2019. He didn’t break out until he was 28. Hunter Brown was a 5th round pick who didn’t break out until his 3rd season in the majors. Of Houston’s 7 players projected for 3+ fwar, only 1 (Kyle Tucker) was a truly pedigreed prospect. The current Astros roster projects for 45.3 fwar, 4th most in the league (2nd in the AL) and more than the current Mets’ roster, which includes their new $700M player.
Because we all know it doesn't work that way. Soto will end up on a mediocre, underperforming team with money tied up. There is absolutely no incentive for Soto to even play well or through injuries as this is all guaranteed money. And even if somehow he does end up being on a team that makes it to the World Series in a few years, fans know their team will suck on the back end of that contract. There's also no guarantee that the Mets ownership doesn't high tail out of there within a decade leaving the new ownership the bill. Fans know what's going to happen and a few good years can't sugarcoat the offensive downfall waiting for them.
Not at all, just need to persuade Philly that Pressly is a team player and would love to play in the 8th inning of games again.
You said rebuild the minors. I'm saying I the minors don't need to be rebuilt. In fact I'm for trading a few guys to add guys like Casas and Robert to the MLB roster. Brown does need to add 4-5 top prospects each year and I think Brown can do this by adding 5 difference makers in the draft, international signings. This is supposed to be a strength of Dana's and after looki g at Matthews I'm a believer.
One can list all the past prospects that have panned out, but I think it is pretty clear that the farm is not refilling talent (either directly or through trades) as fast as it is leaving/getting old/injured. The Astros payroll ranking peaked in 2020 relative to league spending and has been Top 10 since such that it is not a financial issue. Sure there have been some spending mistakes recently. No farm is truly ever completely barren, but a healthy farm should be able to produce a LF or a 1B at a drop of a hat. Maybe, the farm is healthy this coming season and guys just weren't ready last season. I just don't see the statistical darlings that I've seen in years past. Though I will say the ball hops off the bat of Mattews when he connects. I just don't always trust guys with tools that can't hit minor league pitching well above average.
Yeah, I never believed that for a second, and interpreted that as a negotiation ploy w/ The Yanks from Soto’s camp
If you look at Soto’s contract, it plays out to the Mets (and 4 other teams) valuing Soto’s age 28 season as something upwards of $70M, possibly more. Tucker is not quite as good, but there’s potential that he has something like $50M in surplus value. That should add up to some serious (potentially franchise-altering) prospect value if he was traded. The Soto contract doesn’t just change the game for free agents, it also impacts trade values.
