https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/intern...-find-unitedhealthcare-ceo-suspect-rcna183228 "A Gallup poll released Friday found that Americans believe health care quality is at a 24-year low. Those polled said health care coverage is even worse, with 54% saying it’s fair or poor."
Costs were rising much faster before ACA. They succeeded in decreasing that. They also made it impossible for folks with pre-existing conditions to be denied on that basis. It was a huge win for the nation. Healthcare still sucks. It is in part because of the objections of Republicans and their unwillingness to make the changes needed.
It goes beyond the healthcare industry - look at the response to the guys in the deep sea sub. Americans - especially 40 and under are sick of the level of income inequality and have lost trust is the government, businesses and institutions like the SCOTUS. The Democratic establishment walked into the foolishness that they “got it” and they didn’t- now some on the right are doing the same thing. This isn’t a democrat versus Republican situation. This is a country that is skeptical of everyone and will support whomever changes it for the better … which is why I say MAGA better deliver or it will get REALLY ugly for people like Musk and Saks and others that think they know what the people need or want.
It'll be awesome seeing oligarchs, who openly laughed with Trump at lazy min wagers, call for pain and sacrifice when it comes to yuge government cuts. Usually these promises end up being China style "corruption purges" where they enrich themselves by knocking out their direct biz competitors and call it a day. The real change could cause unforced riots.
The FBI is now offering a $50,000 reward. Not sure if that's in addition to the $10,000 the NYPD is offering or how that works. I assume the FBI's involved because the suspect traveled from outside NY. Perhaps they're involved at the NYPD's request. Again, not sure how that all works. But **** if they're not pulling out all the stops to find this guy's killer. What's interesting about the above, at least to me, is that when doing a quick search of the NY State Police's for the Wanted and Missing, they simply ask for the public's help--there are no rewards, at least on the first page of results. There's a family of four on there that were literally bludgeoned to death in Albany... The reward being offered to apprehended their killer: $0.00. Elsewhere I read that their church put together $5,000 dollars as a reward, but nothing from the city or state, including mention of that reward...
These autistic billionaires with zero social intelligence are going to find out real quick that the neoliberal society that allowed them to accumulate and protect their billions is a whole lot better for them than the self inflicted techno-feudal dystopia where they get murked by a disgruntled serf.
The ACA was responsible for destroying small practices, competition and consolidating power in the hands of corporations that now mostly to profits and shareholders.
No it didn’t, the ACA pushed for changing reimbursements to reward “bigger” and thus consolidated the power with corporations. You can literally see health care costs sky rocketing following this. It was a terrible half measure. It also led to what will most likely in the next decade (and has already started) to the destruction of physician led primary care. Nobody is going into the probably the most important segment of medicine. You don’t even see a physician most of the time now
Protecting people with "pre-existing conditions" is so crucial. That was the primary focus/win of the ACA- not solely lowering costs.
I dont want to derail the thread but just want to quickly comment on your last paragraph. Theres no way in hell Trump/Elon's policies will help anyone who's not in the top 1% (starts at about $10M net worth). Even millionaires ($1M-$10M) are now considered middle class. As long as you need to work for a living (including doctors and lawyers) you are not in the Upper class. Middle class people exchange their time for money. Rich people exchange their money for time. That's the difference. Also in a recession, the ordinary millionaire will also suffer (their home's value, their 401k, etc). The 1% can weather a recession and buy assets up at a fire sale discount- coming out of a recovered economy much wealthier.
They were already skyrocketing. The increase was smaller after ACA. Again, it would have been even more of a savings had they not had to cave in to the compromises to get enough conservative votes. Imagine how much better it could have been.
It seems it has consolidated into a 4 tier market; for-profit only, academic driven, non-profit/charity, and low income/subsidized. I was a big supporter of Advent health, however they have become much more corporate and swallowed that DEI money.
I think a lot of people forget what healthcare was like pre ACA. Costs were skyrocketing faster than now and many many more couldn’t get coverage. The ACA obviously isn’t perfect and many of the fundamental problems remain firm prior to it but there is a good reason why it’s remained popular and Republicans even running on removing it have failed. Will note again that even in the last Trump administration when they came close they had no replacement plan and even many republicans who while publicly excoriating McCain were glad he did save them from dealing with the fallout if it had been overturned.
Ironically Mn where United Health is based has one of the lowest uninsured rates, some of the best health outcomes among the states and one of the more robust state exchanges.
