I understood what you meant and I think we all know they are waiting on Bregman. Underwhelming and probably ineffective strategy.
Sharing this article, Bowden suggests Bellinger trade for astros. Ready for winter meetings to start. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5968557/2024/12/04/mlb-trade-proposals-winter-meetings/
So for 3B, Bregman or Polanco??? As for a big name, Bregman or Walker? Would anyone taken that Adames deal over Bregman's asking price?
Which asking price? If you are talking about the Machado deal that Boros mentioned, then yes this deal is better. But Alex at 7/$200M is a better deal than Adames at 7/$182M. Adames may be younger, and worth an extra year or so than Alex because of it, but he is not as good of a player. Despite playing SS and getting a boost because of it, he has had exactly 2 seasons of 4+ bWAR (2021 and 2022) 2021 is the only full season that Alex has not had at least 4 bWAR. And that's, just on the field. He is worth more for his off the field qualities. I hope he accepts this deal from the Astros, ( My prediction for tge past 2 years) but if Adames gets that, Alex's market is 7/$200M or higher.
I think this puts Bregman out of reach for us. We should pivot to the trade market for Robert and 1b. Let Dicenzo have a shot at 3rd.
200 mil is a lot for Bregman. He is a very solid player but damn. I could be wrong but I don’t see Houston signing him for that.
I agree that they may let him go. Maybe they "get creative?" Offer 6 / $175M + 7th year $15M players option w/$7M buyout + 8th year $10M player option w/$4M buyout. Choices: $182M in 6 years. Same as Adames but over 1 less year. $194M in 7 years. $200M in 8 years. Only $8M difference between 7th year option and buyout, so likely to decline it, especially considering likely value of 2031 money. Only $6M difference between 8th year option and buyout, so likely to decline it if doesn't decline 7th year. For CBT the contract AAV is $25M.
Regardless of whether Bregman returns or not (and maybe even more so if he doesn’t return) the Astros will have the ability to really improve their roster if Dana plays his cards right.
Looking at these contracts vs projections, Crane will need to pony up for that to happen. I don't see ANY scenario where 3b is better in 2025 if Alex moves on. But the right move could be better 2026+
I actually hope Breggy comes back and would be happy with: 8 / $208M ($26M AAV) 7 / $200M ($28.57M AAV) 6 / $180M ($30M AAV) 5 / $160M ($32M AAV) 4 / $140M ($35M AAV)
Bregman was always getting 200 million, that was pretty obvious if you actually saw the market. If Crane doesnt want to pay fair market price then he's gone.
