Advanced NBA Stats - which ones do you believe in?

Discussion in 'Houston Rockets: Game Action & Roster Moves' started by AroundTheWorld, Nov 25, 2024.

?

Which advanced NBA stats do you think are the most meaningful to determine how good a player is?

  1. BPM

  2. EPM

  3. LEBRON

  4. PIE

  5. PER

  6. VORP

  7. Net Rating (Offensive/Defensive Rating)

  8. Something else, like (real/adjusted) Plus/Minus or On/Off stats or Win Shares

  9. Only counting stats like points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, turnovers

  10. Screw stats - only the "eye test" counts

Results are only viewable after voting.

Ugh. PER got votes. I get it is better than nothing, but think as the game is better understood and there are better data inputs, that better models would get accepted while older models get phased out. I cringe when I see it still used.

Comparison of the statistical production of our young core (Reed excluded, due to small sample size), last season and this season combined, to have decent sample size.

Three guys with clearly positive advanced stats, one clear franchise player.

The stats confirm my eye test:

Alpi, Amen and Tari are the core of the young core.

    Jabari best shooter.

Jalen and Cam not best at anything (actually: Jalen most durable, never misses a game), but they still have potential to contribute.

First of all I think it's important to understand what the stats mean, not all of these stats are trying to tell you who the "best player" is. Some of these stats are telling you different things.

That aside, I like looking at all of them to see what the "consensus" is. There's a twitter account that does this, it looks at all of the "all-in-one" stats and averages them together for player rankings and I think that's probably the best list that you can get. In general I think there are probably some good things and some bad things in each of these stats, so averaging them together is a way to smooth that out. So I think they're all valuable.

Just googled it real quick and it looks like this is the most recent time he's posted it, which was last year. I don't think he's done it yet this year.

VORP but Playoff only. Because it is played and refreed differently. Also context matters at least as much as the stat itself.

I don't really have the time to think about the advanced stats. It's hard enough to watch or listen to the games.

But the stats I seem to be focusing on most is the +/- from game to game. Who's trending and how over the 4 or 5 games my memory can seem to hold. I care less about the numbers in losses than I do in wins. I want the players with the highest +/- over 2 or 3 wins to get more time. Obviously I don't put anyone outside of our top 9 to even be considered.

    It's not just the media.

    It's also our own superfans.

And Fred at 40. But I don't understand where they left Dillon. Should be very high as well.

He's at #188 lol. As @astrosrule has been saying repeatedly, pretty much every advanced stat says that he sucks.
