The issue with Reed is that he was the 3rd overall pick but his development so far suggests he can be at best a TJ McConnell impact a few years down the line.
100% disagree….if he learns how to play at a higher level, he could someday be the next Scottie Brooks. Beooks has a couple rings, so that would be a good thing.
The Reed Sheppard that everybody wants is not a PG. He is a SG. He must not bring the ball up the floor to initiate plays. He must constantly be moving around off ball like Curry ready to get his shot off. The best lineup for him to be in would be with Amen and Tari.
He'll be fine. However: Stop hiding away from the action in the far corner. Be more assertive and aggressive.
One of the problems with Reed is he doesn't get the benefit of playing w Sengun as much. Sengun produces multiple wide open 3s a game for Brooks and Green, but nobody in the 2nd unit gets doubled, so it's tougher for him to get the open man looks he needs. I bet he would like much different if he were on Golden State.
He gets deflections but they dont amount to anything so I wouldnt call him savant like. He has really quick hands on D but thats offset by having Trex arms with a 6'3 wingspan. Getting deflections but not getting the steal or causing a turnover is like an incomplete grade. Its like getting a block but always giving the ball to the opponent for a 2nd try. Thats just a fake stat at that point. OTH Tari Eason and Amen have less deflections than Sheppard but they get more stonks because they have long limbs that can get the ball from the opponent. Those stonks they get generate more opportunities for the Rockets and make an impact towards winning. I think for now rather than backing up FVV Sheppard would be better off backing up Jalen Green and being an offball scorer similar to his college days. Thats how he found success anyway, leave the playmaking to Amen.
I beg Udoka to quit pairing that bum with Jalen Green. Put him with VanVleet.....who is suppose to be the teacher. Keep Jalen Green with Tari and Amen
More often than not, he doesn't shoot 2-4 times in 5-8 minutes. Even Ime's mentioned him passing up shots they want him to take. I'm willing to bet they're trying to get him to be more selfish. I think some of the problem is that people expected him to be a Nash or a Curry, and he's never been shown to be either of them unless you count high school, maybe. He's shooting around 35.7% on 3's, but also 36.7% FG. The 3 pt. shooting so far has been inconsistently meh. And, let's face it, Reed being the 2nd best 3 point shooter on one of the 4 or 5 worst 3 pt shooting teams in the NBA isn't really saying much. The league average on 3's is 35.8%. I'm not giving up on Reed or anything - I thought he would be one of the best gambles in this past draft, but you do have to start questioning or at least considering, not necessarily the missing of shots, but at least the why of not taking them. I'll have a better opinion of him in a couple of years. lol.
Chill guys. We’re just really good and he was not supposed to be ready to get rotation minutes for a playoff team right away. He’s young and wasn’t even a starter in college. Amen looked timid his first 20 games too. He’ll be helping us by midseason, just let him have his ups and downs right now without jumping to conclusions. He’s going to be exactly what we need when we need it.
I was told Steph Curry, better than Jalen Green day 1. But then again that's what they told me about Scoot Henderson and TyTy TyTy > Reed Sheppard
I think his slow start comes down to a few important things. - He plays mostly with a unit of Amen, Tari, and Lansdale/Adams. None of them are going to create him an easy shot by drawing multiple defenders, like Sengun would. Amen and Tari are totally capable of scoring, but they don’t command that respect (yet), so Reed will have to learn that his best shots are going to come off of Adams screens, and he needs to be ready to fire. He doesn’t look for his shot in those situations, and that’s probably the best he’s going to get right now. - He oftentimes looks like what Cam has looked like out there, when his number isn’t called. Going to the far corner and camping out. Unfortunately, Amen/Tari/whoever don’t often seek him out in the corner for a 3. There are times when he finally gets open, but once those guys get into the paint, they aren’t looking to kick it out. Amen is a great finisher at the rim, and Tari is much improved this year, so I get it. It doesn’t seem like any plays are run for Reed, so he just lingers out there, but doesn’t actively look to get open for a shot. He might benefit from watching hours and hours of video of Steph moving without the ball, to get a sense of how to work to get himself open. - Having a high pick with a competitive young team is tough, as there are talented people in front of him, so his “fit” with the 2nd unit isn’t ideal. He would fit better with the 1st unit, but understandably isn’t ready to run with them yet. So he’s kind of stuck in a tough spot. Best for him to just do what he can to make the right play when he’s out there, and shoot when he’s open, and let things develop over this year and next. He will get his chance.
