He needs confidence. He may be able to get some in the G-League. Or, he may not. Right now he’s almost unplayable. Help him so he can help the team. If not he may become the next Jimmer Fredette.
He isn't doing the other things well either. After he bricked the wide open layup tonight, Ime knew he was shook. He does not look like the same player that we saw in summer league.
Yeah I'm pretty bullish on Reed but he needs a G League stint. He just looks so unsure and in his head. Might need to just simmer for a bit. Lineups with Fred aren't great and ideally he'd play next to JG but Green is way too inconsistent to rely on him and Reed together for any extended stint.
Correct. He doesn’t look like summer league Reed, or Kentucky Reed. I’m as surprised as anyone. It looks to me that his ball handling skills aren’t strong enough for him to create his own shot, or to be the lead point guard. I still think he could be a good NBA player, but it will take time. He’s very young, so he has time to grow. With the way this team is developing, it would be better to play Holiday over Reed in the short term. Let Reed go to the Valley and work on his game and get big minutes.
He just needs a game where the Rockets are up big and he can just shoot it nonstop to get that confidence. He's played some good defense out there so I don't know if g-league is all that necessary. He just needs his shooting confidence back.
I think some people thought he would enter the league shooting lights out. It could have happened, but he is playing so subdued and deferential on offense that he is not hitting anything. Given his size and lesser athleticism compared to other NBA starting guards, he just won't succeed playing that way. He has to have a Mamba-esque, "I'm gonna do this anyway attitude." It's why letting him get that back in the G Leauge is a good idea, even if they aren't as good talent in the G League.
I don't know if it's a confidence thing. It definitely could become one. He's proven in high school and a few college games he's willing to put up shots, but if he's not going to put up shots in the NBA because of the coverage, I'm not sure sending him down there and having him put up 20+ ppg and dominating (hopefully) is going to do much because he's going to come back to the NBA and see the same coverage. Like, I've seen enough dudes in the G-League look incredible and then do nothing much in the NBA. If what you said is true, and it's a confidence thing, then they've probably got more to worry about.
he looks overmatched and like he doesn’t belong on the court a lot of the time he has played 237 minutes and has yet to take a free throw he has put up 79 shots and has yet to take a free throw the amount of minutes and number of shot attempts without taking a single free throw have both gotta be NBA records
It seemed to me tonight that they were consciously trying to get him the shot early and he did shoot them without hesitation. My guess is that the coaching staff was trying to get him going. But he missed the shots. And the game was close so he never got the chance again. I am also guessing that he does hit shots in practice. If he was shooting in practice as poorly as in game, there would be no reason for the coach to play him in non-garbage time.
The biggest difference between the top rookies and Reed is they’re all getting the Jalen Green treatment - guaranteed minutes and starter spots despite some shooting 35% from the field. Reed is getting the Amen treatment and is benched whenever he stuffs up or misses a shot. Which doesn’t help his Jeremy Lin mindset right now. He needs to be in the G-Leagues where mistakes means **** all. Get his reps up!
Ironic the annoying shots that FVV takes is exactly why he has been successful. He has irrational confidence. A non confident FVV would not make it in the NBA. If Reed stays meek like this he won't be here long either. He needs to learn FVVs mentality
This thread is divorced from reality. He played 5 minutes and took 3 shots, that’s a lot of shots. If he played 35 minutes that would be 21 shots. Also, isn’t he shooting 38% from 3? From this thread you’d think he was shooting 15%. Why is everyone acting like he’s shooting so poorly?
Because more minutes for those other rookies is showing to help those teams win games while playing Reed over more minutes to FVV, Jalen, or Amen is less productive for the Rockets. The needs of Reed aren’t outweighing the needs of the Rockets. I think he’s doing okay as a spot backup where we aren’t seeing a huge drop off which is great, but you still are going to be more productive with the other guys. Reed just needs to stay ready. At some point im sure FVV or Amen or Jalen will have time off due to injury or rest. They’ll need him to step up and not be a huge drop off in the short term. The issue I’ve always argued is I think Reed is fine as a late first early 2nd draft pick to be groomed as a backup. I really like his ability to be a solid rotation PG and shooter. But he’s just too damn small and he doesn’t have otherworldly talent as a PG like seldom in the past have. There’s only a handful like Nash, Stockton, CP3 etc so it’s unfair to try and set that expectation. I like Reed and I think he’s a great fit for this team but he was just drafted way too high. I also acknowledge the poor draft projections for all the projects is partially to blame and the Rockets were knowingly okay with drafting less upside for a safer bet than his counterparts.
he’s shooting 36.7% from the field and 35.7% from deep…for a guy who’s supposed to be a generational shooter and is so selective with his shot attempts, that’s pretty bad hasn’t taken a single free throw yet…doesn’t collapse or put pressure on the defense I remember feeling surprised that he quick triggered 2 threes in tonight’s game because that’s not like him…he usually passes up any semi-contested look and often passes up open looks too
Because he missed all those shots he took? If he played 35 minutes thats 21 missed shots? While Sheppard has a good 3 pt percentage, he takes so few shots his percentage is statistically irrelevant. When he has a great game he scores 6 and when he scores bad he has 0 thats just unacceptable. Rox specifically got a lower ceiling guy because he was supposed to help immediately and it came back and bit Rox on the butt. Instead they got a lower ceiling guy who also is extremely raw and unprepared for the NBA.
20 games in a season where your team is deep. It is not easy to just come in and play amazing 10 minutes and shoot great, especially if you don’t know when those shots are coming. He also just played brutal schedule of 7 games in 12 days. Even though he is not playing lots of minutes, it takes a toll to travel. Pack, sleep in different bed every night. He is adjusting as a guard. I see great potential in his future. Handles will get sharper just like Amen last year. Not worried about shooting touch just like Jabari, it will be up and down. When the game slows down for him then he will take those pull up jump shots like FVV. Don’t focus on Reed too much for now. I would focus on Tari and Jabari. They are the ones needing the next big contract and I’m afraid we will have to choose between them. It will be difficult.
Yeah to be clear I’m not saying you have to like him. Or that he’s been really good. A lot of criticism is valid. But “terrible 3 point shooter” when he’s in the high 30s and the second best on the team, and “way too hesitant” when he shots 2-4 times in like 5-8 minutes of game time are just weird ones to me.
I think it is fair to say that he is hesitant. There are many occasions that he passed up shots. He would curl around the screen and there would be space in the midrange where he should be competent at making shots there. But most of the time he hesitated. It might not be a big deal if he wasn't supposed to be a shooter. But he is. Shooting is his job. I think I mentioned it in the game thread. The team seemed to be intentionally trying to get him his shots after he entered the game. It's a stark difference from previous outings when nobody was looking for him. It probably was communicated to him and his teammates before the game by the coaching staff. Unfortunately he didn't make the shots and he never saw the floor again. I have been a huge fan. But so far it is somewhat disappointing. But it is also hopeful because the coaching staff apparently has not given up on getting him non-garbage minutes.
