Offensively, I agree with you. But he has improved at least as much defensively as he has disappointed offensively.
Sengun is sixth among all players averaging 25+ mpg in PIE. Our next player is Amen at like 50th. Sengun is also like 6th in defensive rating. Stop looking at just one side of the ball.
If we're using PIE then the Blazers should build around Robert Williams and the Thunder around I-Hart. In PER Sengun is in the 17-18 range. The defensive metrics are also a bit overblown because they're largely team based, not individual based. He got roasted a lot by the Blazers a few days ago. But it's fine, he's been better. He isn't All-Defense or anything, he's just not a traffic cone. Same with Jalen who has been better. They are like opposites. Sengun is a better team defender and Jalen a better on ball defender. Neither is "great". They are both "acceptable to good". The star jump hasn't happened. And it's 100% Sengun's own doing. He seems indecisive and limp when he's around the basket. He gets stalled out by random players...and absolutely nullified by Chet/Wemby and soon enough Clingan. This is my concern with him. He currently isn't the type of player that can look at anyone and say "you can't stop me" quite like the true alpha players can. Could he be? Yeah I kinda was expecting that this year. But it hasn't happened. And that's fine but that isn't a 1A player. Still waiting and his teammates missing shots are a separate issue altogether. That currently isn't Sengun's biggest problem. Still our best player...but not a star. Yet.
Yeah, no. PIE can be skewed if you don’t normalize mpg (25+) and games played (15+). Otherwise, it’s a great idea way to demonstrate a player’s overall impact. With those standardizations, outliers likes Robert Williams and Hart at knocked out, leaving a pretty solid list, and Sengun is 5th on it (Hart had only played one game).
I don't like it, I also don't like hearing about Greens defensive improvement. It's cope. We already have a strong defensive coach with tons of defensive specialists, we need to put the ball in the basket, it's so damn painful
Lebron, KD, Tim Duncan, Shaq, Luka, Derrick Rose? Probably Kobe. Maybe Tmac? Maybe Anthony Davis? Arguably Ja Morant? Can we include Hakeem?
His shot isn't there because he's exerting himself on both ends of the court and his stamina is wearing thin. He will adjust find his rhythm.
I'm confused. You're upset that he's 18th in PER (14th when you take out guys averaging 20 mpg or less)? That’s fantastic for a 22 yr old. The only other 22 yr olds higher than him are Wemby and Paolo.
That's exactly what I'm thinking. He stopped preserving energy on defense, so he is more exhausted and it messed a bit with his touch on offense. I would expect him to get it all together eventually.
I'm glad we have a player that high and until further notice, he's our best player. He would be much higher on the list of he didn't seem like a worse version of himself on offense. He needs to be better. He's our best player right now but I'm not seeing an All-Star level leap at the moment. Just a slightly better defensively slightly worse offensively version of last year. He was 19th on this list last year. He's 18th so far this year so....fringe All Star production. I have high expectations of him and he isn't really meeting those. I still haven't seen a "Peak Sengun" game from him yet. But his conditioning seems a little off so maybe he's just rounding into form. Jackson mentioned he was winded in the 3Q vs Portland. He hasn't been dominant. Just very good. And it's his fault. Not the coaches and not his teammates.
