On/off data takes a LONG time to normalize, even a full season isn't enough. You really need multiple year samples for it to be really meaningful unless you have a jokic situation where it's just a one man team.
Lavine is a gunner, he provides very little elsewhere and all round. He is not a bad gunner. Gunners are the least important in a team game, I might be wrong but that is how I feel. Jalen has improved everywhere else but the essence of gunning......he is not really efficient at that. He shows flashes of superstardom but in reality he is not elite in any skills that is why he is never reliable. You can't call having speed the most important stat in basketball.
Jalen wouldn't look so bad with the James Harden shot diet, he's taking over 30% of his shots from mid-range (between 3' and 3PT) where he's shooting under 35%. A pull-up midrange from him should warrant a quick trip to the bench.
I like on/off stats as they tell a story. I haven't watched much Lakers this year, but when I look at the Lakers lineups....Russell is playing with Lebron, AD, Reaves, Hachimura, and/or Knecht. When Russell comes out, Reddish, Christie comes in and plays with those guys. I look over at EPM and it basically agrees with the story. The Lakers have 5 players that wouldn't be more than garbage time/ G League players for the Rockets (Knecht hasn't been bad, but he's behind Cam). Lebron's On/Off numbers are getting killed by those minutes with those that would be garbage time or G League players for the Rockets. So while I haven't watched the Lakers much this year, the stats suggest they still don't have enough NBA players which was expected, and Lebron no longer can win with G-Leaguers.
Just cuz he improved doesn't mean he's actually good at it. His passing is still terrible. Just last night he tried that lazy left hand swing pass to Reed that instantly gets stolen for a fast break. Then he immediately got benched. While his 1 on 1 defense has improved his overall team defense is still really bad. He never knows when to rotate or he just leaves people wide open to get back to his man when he shouldn't.
Probably would take a three team in the offseason….. But if we decide/end up keeping the core together in the offseason… Anfernee Simons would be a great fit.
I do believe Udoka needs to put restrictions on the shots he will allow Jalen to take before getting yanked. For self created shots: - First things first - Jalen can't take 3pt shots with 16 seconds or more on the shot clock - the team can DEFINITELY get a higher quality shot in those instances and you don't make them at a high enough clip to justify taking them even if WIDE OPEN. If he can get his wide open 3pt percentage over 36% then we can re-evaluate this one. - 2nd is the only middies you get are floaters - your jump shot is your 3pt shot and otherwise you need to be hitting the hoop. Your shot mechanics are too sus to justify a CP3 style mid range shot so either get closer so you can hit a floater or get a layup or you just have to find a way to get back to the 3pt line. - 3rd is you get two plays a game to avoid defenders at the hoop - otherwise you gotta go into their body and pick up the foul. No more of this jumping away from defenders and putting yourself in a better position to miss the shot. - Finally I'm telling Jalen he HAS to improve his assists while self creating - he has just thrown out all attempts to even look for his teammates after his hot start. He is very Jordan Poole looking at this point. For shots his teammates set him up for: - he has the green light to shoot anything where he is open provided it's assisted from one of his teammates. Like 90% of his makes are the shots his teammates set him up for easy makes. At this point he is his own worst enemy for his efficiency. ....at this point I have little hopes for Green long term in terms of bball IQ but I do believe in multiple intelligence theories and I do believe he can be a useful player in the league...but not a $30mil guy. .His fate in the league is going to hinge on whether he has enough kinesthetic intelligence to bring consistency to his shot mechanics to make more of those tough shots. He may actually get there and be a 'tough step back shot maker' or tough layup maker. He does that multiple times a game today in the highlight reel ....but his decision making and processing of the game is likely always going to be bad....and the other 10-15 shots he misses that no one thought were a good idea are the ones that are killing the team. I really do think it's time to send Jalen to the bench to start a new life in a different role because this lead playmaker role he has been working on for 3 yrs now just hasn't seen enough improvement from him to justify the role. If he remains a starter I would even say all self created shots with more than 5 seconds left on the shot clock are off limits and the only way he is allowed to shoot the ball is if assisted or if there is less than 5 seconds on the shot clock.
The Rockets probably wanted to extend Sengun now but Jalen would have been salty all year, but they should have just made Jalen prove that he can put together a whole season of consistent good play. He should have never been handed over $36 million when he hasn’t earned it. Then to give him a player option on top of that, which is usually given to stars and veteran players, is just mind boggling.
It was never a good contract for any team. He plays bad - opts in. He plays well - opts out. Excellent deal for Jalen though.
Who cares if Jalen is salty. We could trade his ass. In fact, we should have traded his ass. You don’t near max a guy who hasn’t proven to be a good player in the nba. Sengun has actually substantially improved all 3 seasons and is a much better player. They weren’t in the same league as extension candidates. This is Stone drinking his own koolaid. But the part I really can’t get my head around is that Ime must have okayed this extension. I mean, ime sees Jalen every day. Was he fooled too?
