Because even though Diz live action remakes are garbage, they still made a billion bucks off 4 or 5 of them.
Yeah, for a property that's still gonna have to have a crap-ton of CGI anyway for all the dragon scenes, making a live-action version of the original feels silly, especially if it is just gonna be a shot-for-shot remake as that trailer seems to suggest. Can you imagine how boring that would be for a director/creative team?
The trailer seems spot on to the original (from what it showed at least) and toothless looked pretty good. My kids didn't care that it looked the same literally shot for shot. I don't think the movie is marketed to adults or are trying to win any awards. The purpose of making a movie, ultimately, is to make money. Parents will take their kids to see this, and buy themselves a ticket too. So they probably asked themselves "why wouldn't we make a live action version?"
You are right. Can't say for kids but I do find the human actors are way too stoic than their animated counterparts. But I guess we are here for the Dragons.
