I would take the trade in a heartbeat! Honestly, we drafted Reed based on our team needs and not based on best available player...last season we were at the bottom of the league in 3pt % - same trend at the start of this season
It's probably too early to revisit so I'll say I would still draft him 3rd until we see more games. My only real concern with Reed has been the lack of shot attempts when he's got an open look. But, I've also started to question his court awareness. There are multiple plays where he turns down open shots to dribble into traffic and ultimately just wasting time in the posession. And, there are other times he just pulls within range of a reasonable contest. I think he's still getting adjusted to the speed of the nba game. That's something that should drastically improve even through practices throughout the year. If we're approaching 3/4 of the year and we're still asking why he isn't taking open shots then there may be a problem.
I wish he was as aggressive as he was in summer league. Granted the competition in summer league is garbage but his style of play was extremely promising there. His confidence in his shot was magnitudes higher.
If you look at how MCain, Castle, Dunn and Wells are playing its tough to say Sheppard will still be the 3rd pick in a redraft. People who keep saying that only do so because they aren't the GM and won't be fired if they waste a top 3 lotto pick. Sure Sheppard can still improve, but so could these other players they are all rookies. MCain rn is playing the way Rox expected Sheppard to play when Sheppard reaches Mcain's level whose to say Mcain wont improve even more? At the same time I don't fault Rockets for picking Sheppard he was the consensus at no 3. How were supposed to know he would struggle at shooting in the NBA. That was supposed to be his forte and the reason people wanted him lol For Sheppard's 3rd pick you could have traded down and obtained Mcain, Ryan Dunn and Wells pretty easily. Nobody serious will say Sheppard is worth those 3 guys.
I still like him a lot, but with the benefit of hindsight I'd probably do it differently. It's way too early to know though.
Not really the same. We know Reed can play team ball, almost to a fault. But can he do the things only stars can? That’s what I’d like to see. Cam is completely opposite.
No one was making that trade. The whole thing about the draft was that it was pretty even from 1-20 and they would all be like pick 15 in a draft. No one was trading another pick for even the number 3 pick because the draft was so bad. Also we don’t need more young guys players. We can’t even play all of the ones we had.
The Knecht thing is probably a moot point. 13 other teams also passed on him. The realistic alternatives were probably Clingan, Castle, Holland. There's not enough information yet to determine whether Reed will be better than those three guys. Also, even if you think the front office might've reached for Knecht (I don't), he would not be playing 38 minutes in any game on this team, ever, period. We have too much depth, too many young players in front of him. He's only able to show his stuff like this on the Lakers because they have like 7 other real long-term NBA players and a bunch of scrubs.
Price had very similar numbers until he got some playing time, and then had some games where it clicked. https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/p/pricema01/gamelog/1987/ Maybe need to let reed play more, and get him to some spot up shots. He is not being used at all.
I still like the pick, just not a fan of how he’s being used. it was a few games ago where we actually ran the high screen for Reed and he hit two quick mid ranges, yet we never went back to it. It just seems right now he’s nothing but an off ball shooter, when he needs to actually be running the second unit.
Wonder how he would look if he got the Jalen and Jabari treatment instead of the Amen treatment. 5 minutes one game, 10 the next, 3 minutes the next, 15 the next is ridiculous for rookie development. Send him to the G-League for consistent minutes and volume shooting and see what he can do. Sheppard has taken 57(?) shots this entire season. McCain took 26 in 1 game.
Stephen Curry was bashed a lot his Rookie Year, came off the bench behind Monte Ellis. Fans were angry Monte Ellis was traded for Andrew Bogut. Fans booed the Owner. Andrew became part of the Championship Team. Stephen Curry injured his ankle so many times. Finally wore ankle braces on both ankles, got stronger. His 5th season became a All Star, 6th Season a Champion.
Yep, people don't understand that rookies have to be in perfect situations. Knecht is basically a scoring Redick, who is better than JJ to coach him? If Stockton coached the Rockets [lol] then yeah Shepp has a chance.
You act like Sheppard wasnt a great situation for the Rockets. Everyone said Sheppard was going to the best fit predraft.
