That is false. It’s exactly what you’re saying. When you say Jalen hasn’t improved, you’re ignoring the fact that it's a pretty steady % while the volume increases. If you acknowledge that volume matters, you simply wouldn't say he's not improved. You'd say he shoots too much. If you can't understand this, then you seriously can't make this analysis. It gets WAY deeper than this, you're not understanding step 1. Further along this analysis, Jalen is creating these shots and it's not comparable to guys who do nothing but the one type of stand still 3pter they're good at. Trust me bro, I know at which level of knowledge you're at because I've been there. You'll get it later. You think it's pretty much all about % and you wonder why coaches don't act on these things. You think you know something others don't know but actually you don't know everything you're talking about if you can be so easily fooled by just VOLUME. You must think Udoka must have some ulterior motive because the universe doesn't allow for the situation where a hard-nosed coach who calls players out constantly is just passive about the one guy. It's an illogical situation. Udoka keeps defending Green taking a lot of 3's. He keeps talking about not wanting Green to attack a crowded paint. He wants this and believe me lol he can also see Green's 3PT%. Sometimes dude it's ok to say "alright I was mad and didn't take that into consideration" and we'll just be like "it's fine dude, we can all be erratic when we're speaking through our ego trying to make people laugh or expressing frustration about the lack of control". It was a false take and then you doubled down acting like you didn't clearly talk about Green's % and ignore the significant volume shifts.
I've heard this excuse for Jalen before. The JOFs will always blame someone else because Jalen can't shoot. There's "if Sengun could shoot threes better" than that would help Jalen. There's "if Fred could set up Jalen better." Or how about "Silas is the reason Jalen can't shoot." It's NEVER about Jalen. The heaves argument is ridiculous, but I got into a back and forth in April about Jalen supposedly getting the ball late in the shot clock and being forced to heave up bad shots. So I watched all of Jalen's jump shots in a game and sent this: Jalen's jump shots vs. LAC on 4.15.24 1st Q Right off the bat, gets the ball at 10 seconds with a pick/screen from Amen, 3 point miss 7:37 wide open long 2 miss 5:50 wide open 3 makes 5:20 gets ball at 12 sec, pretty open catch and shoot 3 miss 4:48 gets ball with 10 sec, pretty open, made 3 3:18 Jalen dribbles the ball across halfcourt with 20 seconds, dribbles till 11 sec left and takes a stepback 3 miss 3:03 Jalen CAN'T get past his defender for about 10-12 sec, DUMPS ball to Aaron with 5 seconds left 2nd Q 3:01 gets ball at 19 sec, dribbles back to a 3 and miss 1:06 gets ball with 19 sec, did a step left and shot a 3 with 17 sec on the clock. miss 0:25 has ball at 20 sec and shoots an airball 3 (probably trying to go two for one, but an awful shot), miss 3rd Q 8:58 gets ball with 18 sec, 3 pointer, makes 6:35 stepback 2, makes In this game, Jalen didn't get the ball with under 10 seconds on any shot I saw. He initiated the offense often (probably some due to Fred being out) and appeared to shoot some bad shots when he couldn't get past his defender. There was some talk that Jalen gets the ball late and has to deal with other player's mistakes. Absolutely none of that happened this game. It looks to me like most of the time he is initiating the offense and just deciding to shoot or try to drive. Also, the stepbacks aren't good shots for him: 2nd Q 6:37 Jalen takes a stepback two near the lane and airballs it 3rd Q 9:07 Jalen takes a stepback three and airballs it It's not all on Jalen. Fred's shooting is sucking and so is Jabari. But when people suggest Jalen is our best three point shooter then I don't know what to say. For a three pointer, I'd take Fred, Brooks, Tari, Reed, Holiday over Jalen. I know Fred is cold but I have much more confidence in him making one we need. Jalen 3's last night: 3-0 first Q, 1-2 second Q, 1-3 third Q,0-4 fourth Q. That's a guy who gets hot but can't shoot consistently. It's been like this for three years and this is the fourth. Don't get me started on the 2Pt%. 42.6% on twos but he is great player who can get to the rim at will. Really?
If Jalen can't shoot, why is he hitting .37 on catch-and-shoot 3s, and .42 on "open" 3s? No one is arguing that Green is a "great" shooter. It's just apparent that he has made major strides as a shooter, and if he wasn't asked to take 9 3s a game due to Bari and FVV's slumps, his average would probably be closer to .37. I mean, I don't know how this is controversial. Do I ever think Green will be a "great" shooter? No. But do I think he will progress to be a "good" shooter, i.e. around .37 on 7 - 9 shots per game? Yeah, I do.
So I went through video of Jalen Green's end of quarter three point attempts this season. All of them were not heaves except possibly the 24-foot attempt with 7 seconds left in the 2nd quarter of the Mavs game for which I could not find video of this attempt quickly, but 7 seconds and 24 feet away should not be a heave. As such, I conclude heaves are not affecting Jalen's three point percentage at all this season (especially wide open) and people that watch the games and are reasonable should conclude the same. People that say heaves at the end of quarter are affecting his wide open percentages probably are not being reasonable.
I wouldn’t even blame Jalen if he misses a bunch of end of shot clock shots, but none of those are wide open - on wide open shots with no one within 6 feet he shoots 26%, that’s what sticks out like a sore thumb in the eye test, he can’t make wide open shots. He’s 30% on tightly contested shots which actually isn’t horrible.
This. I just scanned through the play by play of every game so far this season and by my count Jalen has taken 9 3s this season in total in the last 24 seconds of any quarter or overtime period. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say not ALL of those shots were terrible shots. He made 1 and got fouled on another. So the actual number of shots(shots that are cratering his percentages)we’re talking about so far this season is…maybe 3 to 5.
He is shooting 34% from 3 and 38% from the field dude like what the **** are you talking about. He is shooting WORSE THAN LAST YEAR. Holy **** man. I get it you want Jalen to be good. I do too. He just isn't and hasn't been. Luckily for all of us he's been good to great defensively and everyone else on the starting unit is equally as r*tarded on offense outside of Sengun. Here's where I'm at: Fred is bad for everyone. Mainly Jalen and Jabari. He slows the game way the **** down and makes us a lot easier to defend. I do not want Jalen benched nor do I want him traded. I want him playing next to a more dynamic point guard (Reed or Amen I dont really care) that can actually take advantage of the tools he has. Because right now....the team is forced to rely on Jalen Green "the shooter" and Jalen Green "the shooter" SUCKS.
To emphasize my point regarding the shot diet Ime is asking Jalen to take, last season, Green took 1 "tight" shot 3 per game (defender within 2 - 4 feet) and 3.8 "open" shots per game (defender within 4 - 6 feet). He shot .19 on "tight" 3 shots and .37 on "open" shots. This year, he's taking 4.4 "open 3 shots" per game (hitting .42 of them) and 2.2 "tight" 3 shots a game (hitting .3 of them). In other words, while Green is only taking .5 more "open" 3s this year, he's taking 1.2 more "tight" 3s this year, primarily because he is forced due to lack of spacing caused by FVV and Bari. 2.2 "tight" 3s per game is a massive number, and .3 is actually a decent clip considering the rate. For comparison sake, Steph Curry only takes 1.5 "tight" 3s per game (hitting .33 of them), whereas he takes 5.6 "open" 3s per game (hitting .4 of them). In short, Green has made major improvements on this 3 shots, he just being asked to take way too many contested 3s because, frankly, there's no one else really capable at the moment. If FVV and Bari start stepping up, he won't have to take as many, and his overall percentages will jump considerably IMO.
Again, see my post above. I'm sorry you can't understand context, but as a 3 point shooter, he has made substantial strides. Anyone who thinks overwise is clearly not delving into the details enough. Simply put, Ime is asking him to take far too many contested shots due to the slump of FVV and Bari. Again, details man.
Considering we're talking about a limited data set like "wide open" 3s, 3 to 5 shots can make a massive difference.
I really hope we trade him this offseason - Cam is going to be better for the team anyway. 3 years younger, taller, stronger, better shooter - just as athletic......I think they are showcasing Green. DD
Wemby hits the 50 pt mark before the self proclaimed “walking bucket” Jalen Green. Didn’t think I’d ever say that.
Tari has been my favorite player since his rookie year, I am just educating this board on the probabilities that the Rockets would like a bigger stronger, more assertive player than Jalen..... DD
Keep in mind that all volume scorers have their numbers tanked by such shots. So it's not like Jalen is the only one with this caveat on his efficiency. And it's not like his previous seasons lacked this caveat either, and he was shooting 33~34% back then too. No matter how you slice it, he's still the same ole Jalen Green.
Cam is a selfish player hitting .05 from 3. I have no interest in him. Our obvious core is Sengun, Green, Eason, and Amen. If you’re going to trade, trade for pieces that fit around them.
Exactly. Back those shots out of the calculation and sure Jalens 3FG% jumps 1-2% on the season, but do the same exercise for every player on every team and league wide 3FG% also increases, so relatively speaking it’s still not good. If we are talking TS% then it’s even smaller of a difference. His TS% on the season is 51.9% Back out his 3-5 late quarter bad shots and he’s at 52.9% TS on the season. Still really bad.
