The aging vets who are bloating our payroll were not homegrown talent.

Altuve is prime example #1. Bregman and Tucker will be if resigned. Correa and Springer would have been.

ETA: Point being that signing all your favs at market rates into their late 30s is a recipe for bloated mediocrity. Now or soon.

That's all well and good but players make peanuts when in their early 20s, when they are at their best

Shouldn't they have the opportunity to make some actual money after lining their owners' pockets for 6-7 years?

How many fans are complaining about a player only making $750K but getting MVP votes?

Like I said. System's broken. Don't misunderstand. I want to resign our dudes, but under the current system, we shouldn't.

Technically, they did right by Bregman by paying him $100 million and buying out two FA years.

Teams should be giving more earlier extensions with more guaranteed inflation-proof years. There’s incentive for players to do it in case of injury. There’s incentive for teams to do it if they’re serious about fielding competitive teams and wanting to retain home grown players.

right now, some teams are just as culpable as the players who may want to bet on themselves for a bigger payday many years down the road.

I may be late to the party but a friend from Philly is saying there’s a lot of chatter that Alex will be a Phillie.

Hopefully they can backload the contract and pay Bregs big money in the years Abreu/LMJ/Montero come off of the books. If Bregs is willing to do that he should remain an Astro. If he wants the most money he can get upfront, then Crane should move on. I think Bregs remains a Stro and I didn't think that a year ago.

    Tone setters

Unlike most I could see a world where JV comes back.

    Gotta keep pumping out prospects.

Matthews/Melton/Baez are the next position players out. I'm thinking one of these guys need to develop into a star level player. Matthews would be my bet. Although Baez bat is the real deal.

Problem is that doesn’t affect the luxury tax number which is a part of the issue.

Thing about NY and LA, if Alex gets off to his usual slow start, he would be booed mercilessly by his new fan base, it would be an awful way to go to work every day. I’m sure Alex knows this

I guarantee you that Alex is certain there is no way he will start slow.

How the fans act if he does won't enter his thoughts. And certainly not influence his decision.

A successful pro athlete, irrespective of sport, has unshakeable, unflappable, oft-irrational belief in themselves. ESPECIALLY in a sport where failure is certain over 70% of the time. It's an almost sociopathic mindset that is, likely, necessary to thrive through certain anxiety and public/private scrutiny.

What makes you think his early season performance will suddenly improve?

    I'm not saying it will.

I'm saying Alex has no doubts that it will, so what fans think if it doesn't won't concern him.

Bregman's attitude and look always had a Boston feel to it for me. I could see him winding up being a Red Sox

Next season HEB should do commercials with Altuve doing the Fresh Prince and Pulp Fiction memes.
