I feel bad for the guy but this is exactly why I was like "no no no" to the thought of drafting him. Truth be told, I've been disappointed that Jabari isn't farther along than he is, but glad we took him because he's not a walking injury waiting to happen. He's on the court at least. After Yao's feet I want nothing to do with the extra tall men anymore. Including Wemby.
I feel the same, although I am very impressed with Wemby putting on 25 lbs over the off-season with no apparent negative impact. There have been guys like Durant, while somewhat injury prone, are still among the best ever. I don’t think Wemby ever achieves the superstardom that the press and NBA are so wishful for, but if he can learn to make 3 pters, he can certainly be an impactful player for as long as his spindly legs can carry him.
Can you explain the whole Blek thing to me? I’m an old guy and am curious if this is some youthful joke I just don’t understand. I’m being serious, not confrontational.
He'll be fine. If anything Thunder needs more handicaps since that team is so stacked. They also have Hartenstein coming back to fill the gap. If anything this is terrible for us because this will likely mean Chet won't get the rookie max extension which would have limited the Thunder's salary.
As good as Chet has been, it speaks to their crazy depth that they have Hartenstein who is more than capable to step in as a very solid starting center(scheme versatile defensively, solid finishing plays offensively) and still have Jaylin Williams off the bench. Chet seems like a good dude and solid player - wishing him the best in his recovery. Hopefully not another victim of the big guy curse - it's a shame to see these guys get hurt like that. I imagine OKC is going to be ultra conservative here similar to his rookie injury so he may sit longer than you think but it's not starting out good if he ends up only playing in 90 games out of his first 250 in the league. They officially said they will re-evaluate him at 8-10 weeks. That says to me they are going to make a decision on what additional time they may sit him at that time - not that he is coming back in 2-3 months. Different injury than the first(Lisfranc injury) but both bone breaks from relatively normal basketball activities.
I still don’t think he will have a long career. Him and Wemby both look like they’re one foot injury away from a shortened career. He is a much better player than Wemby though. And Jabari. oh wow, didn’t see Chet was injured last night. Pelvis injury also sounds like it could pose long term problems for him.
Chet is a phenomenal player but this was definitely the biggest concern with his draft profile. The best ability is availability... although Jabari has shown very little with his ability so far....
Jabri does seems to be durable. The problem is that Jabri needs to be on a team like Utah or Washington where he can develop. We are trying to win games so he is not going to get the opportunities he needs to grow.
This is one of those "you don't want to be right but you're right" if you had pre-draft concerns over his health. I guess there's a possibility that they are both freak accidents and he'll go on to play 15 more seasons of 82 games iron man style. Just kinda seems like the more likely outcome is that an extremely frail man is going to continue piling up injuries from what seems like regular contact in the NBA. TKO for Jabari?
You would rather have Chet than Wemby? That's a.....take - I don't think there is a single NBA team that would agree with you but sure, it's a free country(for now).
Wemby is all about potential. Chet is a lot better today, it’s not very close. If you believe in the ceiling and the idea of wemby then wemby is way more valuable. But if you asked teams to pick if they wanted to win a title this year, I think they’d all go for Chet.
Chet Holmgren suffered a right iliac hip fracture, the team announced Sunday night. The iliac bones are the large, flat bones commonly called hip bones, ones that kind of look kind of like butterfly wings when looking at a skeleton. "A return to play protocol will be provided in 8 to 10 weeks," the team statement said, suggesting Holmgren could be out beyond the All-Star break. Holmgren sounded resigned to a familiar but long rehab process in this social media post later on Sunday night. The injury occurred midway through the first quarter when Holmgren and Andrew Wiggins collided as the Warriors wing drove to the rim and Holmgren came to contest his shot. Holmgren fell and landed awkwardly. Holmgren is critical to what the Thunder do on both ends of the court, particularly as a defensive rim protector. He is averaging 18.2 points and 9.2 rebounds a game this season, shooting 40% from 3 — allowing the Thunder to play a five-out style — while blocking 2.9 shots a game. Oklahoma City has been outscoring opponents by 16.5 points per 100 possessions when he is on the court.
Wow. I think this is one of those areas where context matters A LOT. Wemby as a 20yr old playing on a team with very few above average NBA players who's HOF coach is dying is always going to look a lot different than 22yr old Chet on a stacked OKC team with the latest coach of the year, the best scorer in the NBA, likely multiple all stars this year AND multiple all NBA defensive players. I would argue Wemby would look WAY way better than Chet today if they switched teams. I know the offensive efficiency looks bad for Wemby on a team with no scorers and clearly he is still prone to getting bulldogged by stronger players but outside of that he has been everything that as advertised and he is still leading the league in St-ocks by a wide margin. Part of what makes Chet look better is he is surrounded by others who can help defensively, he has teammates who communicate better, he has guys who can handle the ball so he doesn't have to do any of the things Wemby does to get San Antonio a bucket. All those things make you think Wemby is not "ready" but the reality is Chet has a fairly narrow list of things he needs to do for OKC to make them successful and he would look much much worse if those things were on display game after game like they are for Wemby....but just to be clear, Chet is NOT a better player than Wemby today despite what the stats say.
