A couple of weeks ago, I had a conversation about this with the former (conservative) prime minister of a European country. Why does the Left control so much of the media in Western countries? How is it not viewed as a problem in a democracy, if there is no balanced representation of the population's actual viewpoints in the media? At what point does it become problematic for a democracy when journalists are not unbiased, but actually mostly activists for the left? When it's party affiliation over truth? The media is supposed to check politicians. But when the same side as most of the media is in power, is that sufficiently happening? When leftist politicians and their leftist allies in the media not only deride opposing opinions as "misinformation" and "fake news", but jointly try to silence those who express different viewpoints, through censorship and cancel culture? We talked about why so many leftists choose to become journalists. One possible explanation is that while they are somewhat educated, they resent other people's success. They aren't competent or risk-taking enough to become entrepreneurs. They think of themselves as the virtuous ones and think that justifies almost anything, including bending the truth. Right now, there is still freedom of speech in most Western democracies. But I see a dangerous trend of authoritarian leftists trying to undermine that through massive censorship efforts. They hate Twitter because they no longer control it, so they will be going after it with all they have, including violence.
The actual sincere journalists might skew left but that's irrelevant to the executives and shareholders who own the journalists who are more on the neo-lib/libertarian side of the political spectrum so it really doesn't matter what the leanings of the journalists are as their reporting is often overruled by said executives and shareholders who control the editors. Journalism is usually a formally trained profession through college. The right wing hatred and propaganda against higher education means that people who are leaning more left will disproportionately seek a journalism education and seek it out as a career. People who are raised with conservative upbringings are rarely pushed to be professions like journalists. Most of the time they will be pushed to be entrepreneurs, cops, armed services etc, and if you are going to get a job that requires a commie degree it better be in something like engineering. What do you think is going to happen when a cultural aspect of conservative politics is making fun of higher education outside of STEM? Just think about the type of people who chose journalism as a major in college. Ya of course they are going to be more left leaning. No ****.
I think your hypothesis is accurate. They see themselves as the virtuous ones, but it leads to them justifying anything, including bending the truth and weaponizing information. They are the fascists. They are the ones who attack their political enemies. Musk's purchase of Twitter is an existential threat to them, so now he's public enemy #1 (or #2, behind Trump).
@AroundTheWorld Because most of the "left 's" causes are virtuous. The media has been on the right side of history. The standout examples are civil rights and women's rights. The media is on the right side of climate change, issues corporate responsibility in product safety etc. Conservatism is defined by hanging on to past values. The world spins forward
This extremely unlikable woman whose name I don't know doesn't even try to pretend she is a real journalist.
