I was thinking the same thing. I don't think they are good shots, at least shots that should be taken each time you have the opportunity. And I was blaming Green for the bad shot selection. But I have been leaning towards thinking that I might have been too hard on Green on that. Our offense doesn't have depth beyond the initial pnr action and when the players know that they take the first okay shot they can take. To a lesser extent Sengun's shot/action selection has been worse lately as well. It is as much a coaching problem as a bad shot selection problem.
The big problem tbh is a lot of people (Bobby, Invocuck etc) focus on just spewing blind hatred and other just focus on reading statistics without displaying any actual knowledge of the game. It really gets in the way of intelligent discussion tbh. I'd much prefer talking about basketball like this than constantly having to defend one of our best players against the idiocy of "fans."
Here's the thing though, it IS partially Green's fault because most players of his talent level would recognise that it's not working and adjust the action despite the bad coaching. However, Green's evidently never really experienced the good coaching on that end either, and it shows because he doesn't have the instincts to make those adjustments - that's where the coach is supposed to step in and actually teach it. Harden and Steph can run that identical action and make it a great shot, and it's almost entirely because of the angle they take and space they create by maximising the screen. One of Harden's biggest and most underrated talents is using the screens his teammates set for him to their maximum potential. Go watch some clips and look at how much further away from the screener he is when he shoots that 3, if you're not looking for it you wouldn't even realise. When Fred/Jalen jack that 3 in our offense they're further back but closer to the screener, so the defender doesn't have to fight across the screen to contest. When Harden/Steph/etc do it you have to basically mug the screener to get your hand in the face of the shooter, because they're closer to the line but further to the side, effectively turning the screen into a WALL.
For curry and Harden it is a shot they should take more than green because they can hit it at a higher rate. And what happens eventually defenses pay more attention to it, where that advantage or the threat is converted to another advantage. For Green it should be a shot taken every now and then to keep the defense guessing and keep variability in the game. But the defenses won't really bother defending it with an extra effort because he is not hitting at a high rate (would be good to have some stats about this).
Thing is though, they do defend it, they just don't have to try to because they don't need to fight through the screen to get their hand near to him. Whenever Green and Fred take that shot, it's a rushed shot with the defender closing. When Harden takes it he has no worries at all. Jalen's a much better shooter when he's not rushing his shots, but he's almost always taking rushed shots.
Here's a simple image to show what I mean. Red circles are how we currently take that 3pt shot, it's a lot easier for the defender (x) to get to the shooter than if you run it correctly like the yellow circle, he doesn't have to go straight through the screen to get there, he just needs to get past the first initial bump and he doesn't have as far to travel.
Each year Jalen has improved at something in his game play. This year so far it seems he has more strength to play better one on one defence
What exactly does that have to do with JJ Redick's offense? Do you just struggle with words or something? Your one liners come across like your brain's not firing on all cylinders. Like you're straight up just spewing random lines with no connection to the conversation. I'm pro-Harden, I've literally spent the last 2 days making posts about how I'd prefer him to FVV.
JJ's Offence is only in it's first few games. Can't judge it until half way through the season when most teams are at their peak. Then we will see what it is like when teams start to plan and adjust for it and JJ has to adjust for that.
I'm sorry but Jalen Green will never be a no. 1 even no. 2 option on a championship caliber team. If he is .... Your team isn't championship caliber, and right now he is absolutely incapable of being effectively used as a non top 2 option. Şengün can be a phenomenal no. 2. Amen Thompson can be an all world player if he can even shoot 30%+ from outside. Otherwise, this team is still in search of a true numero uno
Are you under the impression that Green is a superstar? You shoot midrange if you can do it efficiently. Taking inefficient shots doesn't help in any way. Lets say you're a coach and the opposition has a guy shooting under 40% from midrange. Are you going to change your defense to prevent him from taking thise shots? Or do you let hom take all he wants ? There's so many things that we need to improve on. Why are you complaining about Green taking 3 pointers when he's shooting over 40% from behind the arc this year. We badly need some efficiency. If Green were able to keep shooting 40%, then I hope he shoots 15 per game.
He also signed a contract that will give him questions what piece in a championship team he really is.
The new tv deal is a big jump, the cap is going up every year. Trey murphy just got 4 years/$112m, and Jalen Johnson got 5 years/$150m. $30m isn't superstar money now days.
It is secured money for his children ....your original question of what shots he should take..... Probably just going to the hole or rack......
