His speech at the Oscars was the best thing I've ever heard. Also, his show After Life is a must watch for anyone that has dealt with/is dealing with deep grief.
Gervais doesn't care what your politics are - who you are - how old you are - where you come from or if you have a terminal disease ---- you are fair game for him to rip your soul out. One of my favorites and I love him even more as he has gotten older and become the thinking mans Don Rickles. It would never happen but I would LOVE for him to be the debate moderator for Trump and Harris - they both would be puddles on the floor when he was done with them
The Office is a masterpiece that spawned a subgenre that's still going strong 20 years later. Extras is fantastic. His standup is atrocious. No idea why HBO had him on the panel with Seinfeld, Louis, and Rock in Talking Funny.
Like many comedians, he had years of brilliance in his earlier life, and then became an unsufferable, whining old man later in life. The circle of life.
He’s a real prick and I’ve never found his brand of comedy funny, but I do respect his level of don’t-give-a-****.
i saw his band "foregone conclusion" play when i was in davos. i was having brunch with noel gallagher (or was it liam?) and the band started playing wonderwall and noel (liam) got up onstage and jammed with them.
Haha this thread is funny, online nerds mocking a guy who’s actually very funny to millions of people and an inspiration as well with how he carries himself, how he’s found a career and a new purpose after the age of 37, is raising awareness for poor treatment of animals (dogs). Maybe be more curious and less judgmental (yes I quoted Ted Lasso).
What's really funny is that you think 'online nerds' having conversations via internet mediums is still some sort of niche thing in almost 2025. Glad Gervais is doing something positive with his celebrity.
Funny how you think that, but that’s not what I think at all. But let’s be honest here, forums are dying and only nerds like us are here. And it is funny that an actual comedian is considered not funny by people who try to look cool by trying to be funny in how they insult the man / downplay his relevance and what not. It just comes across as judgmental, making oneself feel better by mocking another human being - not unlikely making up for some insecurity or just sheer jealousy - who openly mocks people for liking him and makes fun of the fact that he even made a career as a comedian.
There's nothing wrong with comedians becoming less funny over time as their wealth grows and they lose touch with the common world and lose some of that hunger/drive. Seems like a natural progression. I can't think of anyone I found funny two decades + ago that is still as funny today. Maybe Martin Short. The Office is probably the biggest thing Ricky Gervais will be known for, but I think his radio show with Karl Pilkington and Stephen Merchant is a bigger influence on entertainment. It started the comedy podcast era.
