Considering everyone called him cocaine curry I expected more than 11 shots preseason and SL. Good at defense, passing, mid range and facilitating I mean there's a reason we took him top 3 right? He was supposed to do all those well as a top 3 pick to make up for his 6'1.75 height with trex arms. I also bought into the hype during the draft so maybe you didnt have any expectations but I certainly did. If you told everyone Sheppard would shoot worse than Castle in preseason and SL before the draft people would have laughed. So to me to have that happen now is def a disappointment. Cant just rewrite history and go from Cocaine Curry and best shooter ever to suddenly backup pg who needs more time and development. I am seeing the bar lowered to the point people are happy as long as he is better than Holiday. But to me if we just wanted a better backup pg we could've just signed Tyus Jones. As a top 3 pick RS needs to better than guys picked around his range and not just be an above average backup pg. Jabari gets criticized for not being as good as Chet and Paolo even if he was drafted after those guys but Holiday is Sheppard's rival? Thats not fair.
He did say "we had to deal with some back issues..." But it was in the context of answering a question about Reed. So can't really say who he's referring to.
A player like Reed Sheppard is never going to satisfy the Jalen Green type fans because he's a smart player.... you aren't going to see him out there chucking 20 shots a game or making flashy dunks. Instead you'll see him playing good defense, doing the little things to keep the ball moving and setting up better shot attempts for others, and only looking to score himself if it's the best look that can be had. These aren't the kinds of things that certain types of fans are even capable of seeing when they watch basketball... but those are the kinds of things that produce winning basketball.
I don't think the bar has been lowered at all. My expectations are very high - he should be in the conversation for ROY. I just realize the sample size is miniscule, like I said earlier its 11 shots. That's just not enough of a sample size to come to any conclusion. Give it some time .... if it continues deep into the season then start pushing the panic button, but for now, it's far too soon for that.
Good lord. Reed Sheppard has the goods. A blind man can see it coming. He is 20 years old and has yet to play a single game. RELAX. He is playing behind an all-star PG and hopefully a future all-star SG. Let him learn, let him work. He is the real deal. Patience. Reed Sheppard's expectations: Be a sponge and bust your ass. A good chunk of this board was late on Alperen Sengun. Don't miss the train on Reed Sheppard too. He is inevitable.
Sheppard will be fine, but he shouldn’t be getting so much run this early. He looks like a deer in the headlight right now like most rookies. The rotations should look more like this pretty soon. FVV, Jalen, Amen, Jabari, Sengun to start. FVV goes to bench for Tari. Amen, Jalen, Jabari, Sengun. FVV comes back, FVV, Jalen, Brooks, Tari, Adams or something like that. Fit Sheppard in for about 10 minutes with Amen. FVV and Sheppard should never be on the floor together. Minutes distribution: FVV 30 mins Jalen 32 mins Amen 32 mins Sengun 32 mins Jabari 28 mins Tari 20 mins Brooks 20 mins Adams when healthy 15 mins Sheppard, Cam, Je. Green 31 mins Get rid of Brooks and move Tari up to 25 mins and the last group up to 46 mins.
He's slightly more talented than Austin Reaves so people should lower their expectations. He'll develop into a 16ppg 5ass type of player. That being said i'd take a 6th man Austin Reaves over a 22ppg shot chucker any day of the week. He'll be a very valuable player for us in the long run. He should work on his handles with Fred it's not good enough right now.
Booby and Reed fans slobbering over him and hyping him up like he's the next star. Man put up bench numbers. Maybe he will develop eventually but if green started his career with those numbers same folks would b btching and calling him a bust. Temper your expectations, He aint ready yet. So like always b patient. I don't think he's gonna b in contention for RoY but it would b nice to b proven wrong
Jalen came into a completely different environment where he was starting and shooting with volume right away. This is a competitive playoff-level team. We have to judge Reed on the role he has.
The hype only came from Rockets fans wishing something into existence. Every single pundit worth their salt told everybody it was a historically weak draft and nobody would've been a top pick in a regular draft. You can't blame them for a hype that actually didn't exist outside of our fanbase. 3rd pick in a super weak draft, wouldn't have come close to the top 5 in the years we drafted Jalen, Jabroni or Amen.
Bro we had folks already down for getting rid of green for Reed in the starting line up. The hype for him was quite there, ready to go starting player who plays the team winning way or some nonsense.
I think Reed will be fine. He does need to develop more awareness on the pick and roll. He doesn't seem to have a plan - whether it be a quick side step or step back to create space when the pick is set properly or a plan to get quickly down hill when the players go over the screen. I expect him to get there this season, but he is just a role player until he steps up that area of his game. Give me more Cam Whitmore for now.
