In this image from video, originally broadcast by C-SPAN Feb. 1, 2001, President Bush, Sen. John Edwards, D-NC, and Vice President Dick Cheney are seen at a Senate prayer breakfast in Washington.

Wrong, it doesnt matter whether their was a brief encounter many months prior. What matters is that democrats are using this as a way to gloss over the fact that Cheney stated prior.

That statement is true and DOES play to the leadership capabilities of Edwards. How can the democrats address this (Edwards couldnt).

I think Edward's was taken aback by the boldness of Cheney's "never met him" slam so instead of directly responding to it he drew upon a rehearsed response regarding records.

This is one that seems like a big blunder for Cheney. Even if he meant it rhetorically such subtlety is pretty much lost in a campaign like this.

This is the exactly the kind of glaring mistatement that comes up in debates and usually ends up filling the news media for awhile.

OK, that's IT!!! I can't vote for someone with a Vice President who lies about meeting someone! I'm changing my vote!

This is like a bizarro Drudge story.

GWB: Dick, I'd like to introduce you to John Edwards.

DC (grunting): Is this the child sacrifice? I want to drink its blood.

Actually I think Edwards answered that question quite well...

How is that an answer to the question? Did he or did he not have the attendance record that Cheney spoke about? True or False? There is no distortion.

It was only used to characterize a high degree of absenteeism which is the factual matter that really matters. Nice distraction though... :D

Sort of like the "did he? or did he not" cheat distraction that was used to take away how badly Jr got slapped last week.

    mc mark,
I know you are a democrat but I can't see how you think that answers the charge. He said it was a distorment but how? All he dead was question Cheney's voting record, not whether or not Cheney had actually voted.

I think it was a complete dodge of the question myself...

There was your answer to the question.

And dylan as much as it seems like, I've never registered with any party and to this day have never voted a straight party ticket. Hell! I've voted for republicans, democrats and Greens.

That statement is a complete distortion of the truth.

apparently, edwards didn't remember it either, since he never rebutted cheney's statement during the debate. i think here's the docmumentary proof you're looking for:

Except it doesn't really answer the question to me. He told Cheney that the statement was a distorment but how? It just doesn't strike me as much of answer at all, let alone a good answer.

And I do apologise for labelling you, I had meant to type "lean democrat" since I know you have disavowed being a member of the DP before.

    Well 90 seconds isn't much time! ;)

It's all good! I know how I'm voting this time around but my mind is always open for good people no matter what side of the fence they're on.

Sort of-- except the former could have had some impact while the latter could have been a faux pas.

Did Kerry ever explain what that was that he brought out of his pocket?

But it did have an impact. It was possibly a stylish put down, with a valid point behind it. But instead we end up talking about the lie.

I actually agree with you that Cheney had a point. I said it was puzzling to me, and perhaps serves a lesson to not lie when you have a point. Because then no matter how good the point was, the only thing gets talked about is the lie.

If there is a good case why overstate it with a lie?
