My hat is off to Stone, Eli Witus, the front office, ownership - and to Alpi for taking a discount

I don't know the internal workings of the front office, but I believe Witus is a Harvard lawyer.

Morey never had a complete rebuild to direct like this a complete tear down plus tanking. He was told to win with less which he did to his credit until he landed James and the rest was history. Two completely different scenarios. Stone has done as well as you could expect compared to other recent rebuilds around the league. Very few missteps.

Just saying he is probably no stranger to structuring contracts.

The first two years under Silas were painful though.

I knew what you meant. I'm not sure what you said means he's an expert at structuring NBA contracts.

It's been mentioned before that this is Stone's skill and likely the reason he got the job.

It's fine, we disagree. No hard feelings.

Agreed. It was either that way or play .400-.500 ball with Jarrett Allen and Caris LeVert until a star was available that could make a difference. Glad it’s behind us.

Unless the Rockets re-sign FVV next year, they're still an under the cap team next year. Sengun's discount is pretty huge here in terms of flexibility. And since Green basically extended at around his original cap hold for next offseason anyways, it doesn't really affect our cap that much.

Keep in mind both players got player options though. This may not sound like much to fans, but to teams these are huge deals, given that they're nothing but downside for teams and pure upside for players. So the Rockets are paying a price for their flexibility in the upcoming year. Which may matter if one or more of their young players develop enough to warrant big contracts themselves.

Morey was a one hit wonder with James Harden and kept failing to get his costar.

Stone did the rebuild in just 3 yrs and surrounded Gun and Green with the supporting cast they needed.

I agree witn your first paragraph and disagree with the 2nd.

The reason is Sengun could have taken the Jalen deal which is better than his deal. Yeah its less guaranteed money, but its significantly more possible money and tbh 100M guaranteed money for 3 yrs is big already.

Esp with the cap increasing every year Sengun could have made much more money with a JG deal than a 5 yr guaranteed deal.

What if he has a career ending (or career hampering) injury in those 3 years?

    SECURE THE BAG

Alpe took the $$$ecurity. That's not really giving a discount. Rockets weren't obligated to offer more and he wasn't willing to wait another year to secure that 225 max.

Jalen's 2+1 I think is the story. His camp knows a typical rookie max offer is not a reasonable ask. They get a big enough bag but structuring it like a veterans deal means the Rockets aren't on a megahook if he continues to flounder. They can dump him for some underperforming veteran on a big deal who needs a change of scenery. Or he blows up, now you have this 25+ppg Jalen on a team friendly deal for a couple years. Win - win.

The bonus, Alpe's extension counts as a rookie designated extension, which you can only have 2 iirc. But since Jalen's extension is 2+1 and not a 5 year deal, does he count towards that? Theoretically that opens up another slot...

The best thing about these contracts is they set the tone for the rest of the Core 7.

You look at Orlando they paid max for Wagner, they pay 30M for Suggs obviously Banchero would also want Max right? And then then what about Black and Jett Howard, they would want Suggs money at least.

But in the Rox our best player Sengun took 37M/per deal Jatari should be looking at 20M or Dillon Brooks money as the standard or maybe even lower since neither of them are All NBA defense.

100M is securing the bag already. I'm sure his agents know this

Sengun market value is the max he could have taken the Jalen deal which would give him more money.

I mean, it probably is and we're just in a unique situation but Sengun's market value doesn't mean squat. You can't take a deal that's not offered to you.
