MSNBC had Edwards on after the debate. He said that he and Cheney had sat next to each other for 3 hours and talked a few years ago. He mentioned at least one other time when he and Cheney met. Liar or senile? You decide. Edwards said his wife reminded him right after the debate of at least one time when they met Cheney.

I guess another possibility is that the churlish Cheney is just so arrogant that he can't remember a young Senator. Oh well another untruth from the guy. MSNBC also had Senator Leahy of Vermont, the guy who Cheny said f*** you to on the Senate floor who said that Cheney unlike other VP's just meets with the Republicans when he comes on Tuesday. Uniter not a divider. Ha Ha Ha.

To see Cheney meeting Edwards (a picture). Will the media call Cheney on this?

Oh well I guess we could say that they didn't go out on a social occasion. It was merely a quasi political function. Whatever excuse could we make? picture of Ceheny and Edwards together.

They were also guests together on Meet the Press last year for half an hour.

A picture of Edwards walking past Cheney doesnt indicate that they have met. Can someone refute the fact stated by Chaney on Edward's voting record? Or is this "meeting" just a way to divert from the fact.

    Cheney... "Oh, yeah."... classic.

Cheney, Edwards met three times despite Cheney statement

CLEVELAND (AP) — Vice President Dick Cheney said Tuesday night that the debate with Democratic Sen. John Edwards marked the first time they had met. In fact, the two had met at least three times previously.
Cheney made the remark while accusing Edwards of frequent absences from Senate votes.

"Now, in my capacity as vice president, I am the president of Senate, the presiding officer. I'm up in the Senate most Tuesdays when they're in session. The first time I ever met you was when you walked on the stage tonight," Cheney told Edwards during the debate.

On Feb. 1, 2001, the vice president thanked Edwards by name at a Senate prayer breakfast and sat beside him during the event.

On April 8, 2001, Cheney and Edwards shook hands when they met off-camera during a taping of NBC's Meet the Press, moderator Tim Russert said Wednesday on Today.

On Jan. 8, 2003, the two met when the first-term North Carolina senator accompanied Elizabeth Dole to her swearing-in by Cheney as a North Carolina senator, Edwards aides also said.

Edwards didn't forget their prayer-breakfast meeting. The Democratic vice presidential candidate noted the discrepancy at a post-debate rally in a Cleveland park, calling it an example of Cheney "still not being straight with the American people."

"The vice president said that the first time I met Senator Edwards was tonight when we walked on the stage. I guess he forgot the time we sat next to each other for a couple hours about three years ago. I guess he forgot the time we met at the swearing in of another senator. So, my wife Elizabeth reminded him on the stage," Edwards said as the crowd roared.

According to Edwards' staff, Cheney replied, "Oh, yeah."

"She reminded him about the truth," Edwards told the crowd, "and come November, we're going to remind him that the American people do not want four more years of George W. Bush."

It does not count if Cheney does not remember it.

So, my wife Elizabeth reminded him on the stage,"

I was rewatching a tivo'd c opy of the debate on C-Span. I saw Edwards wife tell Cheney tell that they had met when she shook his hand on the stage. . Cheney did not look to pleased. It was barely audible, but I was betting that was what she said.

I was thinking the same thing. It's just one example where I thought Edwards could have really slammed Cheney but for some reason he didn't.

I think they both kept changing topics so much, I am not sure that either let the other really have the opportunity to address the other's "zingers"

It might be because I try to pay as little attention as possible to this election, but I don't understand how it is remotely important whether or not Cheney and Edwards met. Maybe one forgot or the other misremembered. May one or the other or both are lying. Does it matter? I don't get it.

Well, it clearly matters if either is a liar, especially since the effect of the statement in the first place was to place doubt in Senator Edwards abilities as a senator. Is that doubt justified, or is Cheney lying? It's certainly not a key issue, but does play to the leadership capabilities of both parties/teams.

It matters because in many people's opinion it was a highlight of the debate. If that highlight turns out to be based on a lie, then it lessens the effectiveness.

It was, at the time, a slam against Edwards by the Vice President. Later it turns out that it wasn't true.
