The goal is for others to compare themselves to you in a positive manner not the other way around. My take: Jalen Green = Steve Francis Raw talent with all the potential in the world. Could be one of the best maybe ever or statistically successful that fades away quickly.
Once again you said "do you build around Murray or Jokic" not Jokic or Kobe. And once again, Jokic scores more than Murray, an on-point Jalen scores WAY more than Sengun, more than Jokic scores over Murray. And frankly, Sengun is easily as far away from Jokic as Green is from Kobe. Like seriously.
Kobe averaged 29 at 22. Will Jalen average close to that? At 22, Joker averaged 19/10/7. Sengun’s basically there. You build around your best player no matter the position. Right now, it’s Sengun. Could it be Green this season? Sure, if he can average 25+ on good efficiency. But that would be a pretty big leap I’d like to see first.
KAT averaged about what sengun did and was/is a much better shooter than sengun. Was giving him a max the best idea?
I mean, yeah. They got a ton of value when they traded him. And there's a huge difference between giving a rookie max extension (25% of the cap) and giving a third team All-NBA player who is basically at their apex of performance the supermax (35%).
Jake Fischer: Houston has not been willing to approach a maximum contract for either Jalen Green or Alperen Sengun, sources said. Both young Rockets phenoms’ representations have stated each player is deserving of top dollar that, so far, Houston has yet to offer. The Rockets are open to extending both players, but also content with extending neither before the year begins, sources said.
Here’s what’s happening right now. The agents of Suggs, Kuminga, Giddey, Jalen Johnson, Trey Murphy, and yes Sengun are all waiting for one of the others to agree a contract, in the hopes that it will be higher than their team’s offer and they can use it as a benchmark to negotiate up. Nobody wants to go first. But somebody will, because most of these guys are not going to RFA… there’s no money out there next summer. It’s a wasteland. And new CBA minimum salary rules actually make it tougher for other teams to make RFA offers that will probably get matched. Expect a wave of announcements breaking in the next 48 hours.
Hell even Green is a higher level than those guys specially in max extension discussions because all those guys also have the Bari issue of looking like being good role players is their hard ceiling. At least with Green being a role player isn't his ceiling. Like I understand Suggs is a better complimentary piece than Jalen because of his elite perimeter defense but a role playing guard isn't a max contract guy.
Sengun is better in a vacuum, but has the least negotiating leverage and C is a currently a lower market value position. Giddey is significantly worse than all of them but has the most leverage over his team. Still, I think Sengun gets the most out of that group — all the more reason for his agent to wait until the last minute to see what everyone else gets.
I'd wait until at least two months to give Jalen a big contract. See if he can consistently do well for a couple months straight first.
Question for cap gurus: I remember the Celtics were sweating because they gave Brown a non-max rookie extension, which hampered what they could offer later (until he made All NBA). Is that still the case?
Sengun won’t except less and he shouldn’t. There is no doubt in my mind that he would get offered max in RFA and we would match. The only reason not to give it to him now, is if we need the cap room for a deadline deal this year.
I believe they raised the amount you can increase the extension which is what allowed brunson to get what he got, but in theory ya it can still be an issue with extensions
Depends how real his 3 point shooting was last season. If he’s a legit 40% 3 pt shooter than he’s worth it, if not then he’s not
