On March 13th I've got to go to Detroit for this stupid technology conference. It's the weekend before Spring Break, so I'm going to stay up there until the 19th (I would've come back on the 15th, but I got them to push my return date back so I can stay up there and see the city). Now, I've never been to Detroit, or anywhere up in that area before. I don't know the first thing about it. I've been looking a bit on the internet, but I figured this would be a good place to ask -- what should I do?

I'm gonna try to make a Piston's game, and see if I can get a ticket somewhere to see the Red Wings. I'm considering making the jaunt over to Cleveland and/or Chicago too. Go see the Rock and Roll hall of fame perhaps. Maybe visit a friend in Chicago if I can get ahold of him (bartleby, if you're reading this IM me). I won't have a car, and I can't rent one (age limit is still above me for that). Either way, I'm pretty excited about it. Anyone here live up there or traveled up there? What should I do? How can I get around best? What is there to see?

The area downtown by Comerica Park is really nice, lots of places to eat but if you get a few blocks outside of that it's not good.

    Day trip to Flint?

Throw rocks at Canadians on the other side of the river?

    Look at cars and pizza?

Find Ausar and tell him he looks like Amen?

    Ford Piquette Avenue Plant Museum

Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation

    Motown Museum

Seem like cool Detroit-specific things to see (not just a zoo or art gallery).

The streets say Michigan and Trumbull, and Loui's Pizza are the best spots for Pizza

Wife and I have been to Detroit a handful of times, downtown, for football games. its actually a pretty fun little city. Greektown is good for food, casino is there if that's your thing.

Jacoby's is our favorite bar up there, old school German bar great vibe. 624 Brush St, Detroit, MI 48226

Buddy's Pizza Madison Building, 1565 Broadway St, Detroit, MI 48226 is pretty good for some Detroit style pizza.

If you like coney dogs, there are two places next to each other, Lafayette Coney Island and American Coney Island on Lafayette Blvd. They are both long time staples in downtown, Lafayette might have one of the best hotdogs in the area.....

Find out where the hipsters hang. I’ve not been but I hear there is a great DIY culture and a lot of young artists live there because it’s cheap. Find out where they go and it could be super cool. I’d actually like to go myself at some point to check it.

Dime store is pretty good for brunch, still miss it, detroit shipping company also has this really cool outdoor boxcar setup with food

outside of that detroit isn't too bad to visit, but living there is a very dystopian world. The crime isn't the issue as many people believe

That's basically what happened in large parts of downtown, the hipsters essentially took it over and painted a bunch of $hit

Man I wish I had been able to see old Tigers Stadium. Always loved watching Tigers games on TV before it was knocked down because it felt like history alive.

OP this is a very helpful message and you should print it out to take with you in Detroit. Follow me for more helpful Detroit tourism tips.

If you decide to venture into flint and you make it back, bottle up some water to bring home, Ive heard they have some of the best on tap.
