So umm, my kids' school (which, so far, I did not consider "woke") just sent around an e-mail admonishing the parents to not allow the kids to wear any outfits which could offend others as "cultural appropriation". So if a 6 year old innocently wears a Hawaiian luau outfit, that's now a crime?
When I see someone dress as a witch . . . .. . The reality is most people don't have a clue what Cultural appropriation means. (like they don't know or act like they don't know what DEI, Woke or Multiculturalism) It's not wearing Dreds It's saying you invented them and wear them better than the people that did actually invent them Rocket River
Yes, it is a crime. Both child and parents will be imprisoned. That is exactly what the letter from your school was telling you and the policy of all education, is to arrest children wearing luau outfits. If you honestly don't believe there is a reason anyone would be offended by your kid's costume, then don't worry about it. If someone else disagrees then you it is an opportunity for you to learn about other people's points of views.

Costumes weren't the problem when I was a teen. It was the packages of Black Cats we had at the ready, terrorizing the lovely neighborhood of Nassau Bay.
Depends on what you mean by offended. I get a lot of looks here in NY when I wear my Altuve jersey to the store. When I wear a Texans hoodie, not so much. Funny how that works.
The funniest part is that the whole theme of the school is that they mimic the culture of another country - the school uniforms/dresses are themed after another country/culture, etc. Can't believe they didn't catch the irony of all of that.

Yes, but that's my point. People just get offended over everything nowadays. The flipside of that is that intent matters. If a 7 year old girl wears a Hawaiian outfit because it thinks the flowers are beautiful, that's now "forbidden"? What has the world come to?! The kid surely doesn't mean to offend. When I was a kid, I always went as a cowboy and I had a little plastic gun. We always played "cowboys and Indians". Apparently that's now also "bad".
Who said Hawaiian shirts are forbidden? Why do you choose the most innocuous "cultural" tradition to rail against? Hawaiian shirts were shirts some guy in Hawaii started selling 100 years ago, and he certainly wasn't only selling to Hawaiians.
