Me and my boy are traveling to Houston from overseas from December 29th until January 3rd. Will go to the Miami,Dallas and Boston games. WWE is also in town too so will go to that too. I have some questions.

I won't be hiring a car so I can't drive. I will be based in Down Town Houston. If possible destinations using public transportation over uber/lyft. Also public transportation that doesn't require changing buses. Willing to travel about an hour by transportation plus about 20 mins walk from that bus stop.

    1. First the most important question. What are the Best easily accessible BBQs

    2. Recommended rental courts that also have the ability to do private 1 on 1 training sessions and the ability to rent them in the morning time.
I found one called Hoopston Athletics located in Alief. Has anyone been? It only takes one bus from Down town.
It is also close to Little Saigon (any restaurant recommendations)

    3. Plan to go to Space centre Houston. Any other places like this that have planes or cars displayed etc etc.

    4. Truly Texas or Houston things I should see and do? Outdoors or indoors.

    5. Easy take out food spots in Down Town Houston?

I will probably have more questions as the trip comes closer. Thank you for taking your time in answering.

Apart from BBQ what do you like to eat? There's so much.

Hard to say about transit, you’re probably best off taking an uber/lyft. Time of day is critical- if you can avoid commuting during rush hour 7-9am and 330-630pm you should be good within your time constraints. Houston is huge.

BBQ- it’s everywhere and honestly your best bet is to just use yelp or google reviews to find one close to you. Since you’re probably not a BBQ snob any highly rated place will be amazing. You will probably want to check out some good Tex-mex too.

Lone Star flight museum is in the same general area of town as NASA. https://lonestarflight.org/

BBQ; truth bbq is somewhat close to downtown. Also pit room and/ or pinkertons are close but getting places via bus will be a challenge. Unsure if the budget allows Uber or a car rental but this city has awful public transportation.

try some Tex Mex. Lupe Tortilla for fajitas or El Tiempo. Both are somewhat close to downtown. Again tough on bus routes and unsure.

metro is the bus system. There is a light rail from downtown to the medical center and you can walk from there to Rice Village which has some shopping and restaurants.

regarding take out spots, as you will be there during the week downtown has a tunnel system full of restaurants open for lunch (not dinner) during business hours. Above ground, Google maps and check as I’m not sure.

Both the 85 bus (Washington) and 40 (Heights) will take you to Truth BBQ. Get off at Washington/Heights. Short trip from downtown.

    Install the RideMetro App

Transit is only really good along the LRT line but other that not so. Houston is so big and spread out that it will take a long time to get anywhere outside of downtown on public transit.

If you’re not willing to spend a few hours getting to places be prepare to Uber and Lyft.

Your new username has always seemed familiar. I mean I've seen the word before but it felt like it was something specific from my past. And just now, while sitting on the toilet, it came to me. It's the intro song for a meh album from a meh band I listened to 18 years ago. The song is Humanaut, not Cosmonaut, but still. That's what I've been thinking of. There. Feels good to have figured that out.

For award-winning Thai, the Purple Line light rail will take you to Street to Kitchen. Take the Harrisburg spur.

The owner/chef won the James Beard Best Chef Texas a couple years ago. But because of that, it’s recommended to get reservations.

I agree that you're probably better off relying on Uber/Lyft over public transportation. Local bus routes are unreliable and frankly..dangerous. And you have to have a degree in logistics to figure out your trip if it involves transferring from one bus to another.

Just way too many good restaurants to even know where to start. Really, you should be able to open the Yelp app wherever you are and get a ton of great options. Like others have said, make sure you get some BBQ and some Tex-Mex. Our Tex-Mex is the best in the country.

You're going to be here for 6 days and you're going to 3 Rockets games and a WWE event. That's a pretty tight schedule to try and fit everything in. Good luck and have fun! Weather should be perfect.

I live in a different time zone, also been busy at work, plus it takes time to look through and look at the suggestions and now write a reply :p

    I will not abandon thou

All the events are at night so, we have time to kill during the day. I am not the type to sit around a hotel room all day. Plus Houston is like a 2nd home I never knew I had due to supporting the Rockets for more than 30 years. So I have to go out and see it!

Few others have mentioned this place, so I think I will check it out. Is this the type of place to have a line or things sold out?

    Thai looks good!

Installing Ride/Metro app - Good tip!

How about Landrys? :p El Tiempo looks good so I think I will check that one out

That's a good one, even works for places outside of the US.

I am realizing public transportation isn't the greatest, so I am trying to at least find places that kind of have a direct public transportation route. I will use Uber/Lyft for those awkward to get to places, just don't want to rely on it the whole time. Thanks for he input

I guess I save this one for when the kids asleep :p

If I am traveling out of downtown the opposite way of the commuters it shouldn't be too much of a problem? I live in Japan where they pack people into trains like sardines, so a little more people on a bus on a train won't bother us too much.

I am probably not a bbq snob, but being from Australia I do love a great bbq!

The Lone Star flight museum looks great! Definitely somewhere I would take my kid.

I love food and I think I am going to gain some weight while in the US.

I like to eat, spicy foods, south east asian(particularly Thai food) , mexican(looking forward to try some TexMex) , Hamburgers, Pizza, curries. I am not really big on sea food. Houston looks like it has a lot to offer in regards to food. So I can understand giving advice on what to eat is difficult.

Thanks for everyone that has contributed so far. I really appreciate it. Hearing from Houstonians especially about transportation helps me a lot to be more realistic about getting around the town.

If you need to kill time during the day, this place is pretty fun. https://www.cidercade.com/houston/ It is close to downtown and El Tiempo. You are here during the week so it may not be too crowded, but school is out so mileage may vary.

Damn, OP, why aren't you responding, it's been 14 whole hours! Get your life together.

I live close to NASA, let's get lunch and you can gift me something from Japan for the privilege. Hit up my DM.
