Man, on Monday's they run 3 or 4 ads between segments on radio shows all about betting services. Question: if these guys really have the answers, why wouldn't they just bet themselves, make millions and retire?
forreal two things I hate about the Sports shows 1. When they actually BRING THESE GUYS ON THE SHOW 2. FANTASY SPORTS GUYS ON THE SHOWS I turn every time and hope i come back in time to hear something MORE sports related Rocket Tiver
Agreed RR I get soooo tired of hearing about "the line" on 610. That Willie B that comes in on Fridays is the worst. I don't know how that loser pulls a paycheck. Oh yeah. It's because of all the suckers that actually believe he knows what he's talking about. I remember a few years ago Jim Rome was doing a 3 hour interview with a guy that used to have a gambling problem. It was very moving hearing the hell that this poor guy had been through because of his addiction. But every time there was a commercial break, we were bombarded with GAMBLING ADS. That's when I quit listening to Rome.
I wonder if anyone has actually called it to see what they say. They all say it's a free call and all and they guarantee the winner lol....someone should take the initiative and call it up and see what kind of BS scam they are running lol.
Because there are enough suckers out there that don't think like you do? But then there's the age-old question of if economists knew so much, why don't they all make a killing in the stock market and retire?
but you're really in the minority. The entire reason the NFL is so huge is because of gambling. And fantasy football is incredibly huge right now and only continues to grow in popularity. I actualy wish the morning show would have a fantasy segment.
Matt Jackson used to do a whole show on gambling and it would get me so mad. Chris Solich whom Willie B replaced was actually kind of funny though. I used to listen to him just because he was funny. Willie B is just a tool.
You know, I just remembered, I have the Astros at 40-1 for World Series Champions. I almost damn near forgot. I hope I still have the ticket. Must look for it feverishly. I'm on fire this year after winning Birdstone at the belmont too.
I know, I know. The 60 second recordeds are paid advertising and they are horrific. I actually voiced one today as a degenerate gambler/flamboyant homosexual. It sounded hilarious. At least it was fun! As far as the guests that do handicapping...I reluctantly agree with you guys. I am not here to toe the company line, I always try and be honest with ya'll. I do not like it. It is boring and it is narrowcasting to an audience that was listening to us anyway. It's turning off other people that were listening so there is no benefit. It is ok to do specialty segments but not when they alienate your base, IMHO. After this football season I have a proposal already put together that will eliminate them from the regular shows. I like the guys personally (Wooly B, Phil) I just don't want to hear from them as much as we do right now. My proposal takes place on Thursday nights from 8 to 11, coinciding with ESPN Thur. night football. It would be a handicapping show and all of our regular guests would round table. We would also log every pick every one of them made on the air for the whole season and see how good they really are. (I doubt they would go for that BTW) On the paid spots I have no problem with them. They paid their money for a legal business that we have not black listed. We wil run their spots and I wish them luck in their endeavors.
Well...I don't think you can say that gambling is only huge because of gambling. I am not naive to think that gambling isn't a part of it, but there are many other factors. I don't think that 68k of the 70k at Texans games have money on the game. Fantasy segment would be so boring. I could see on Friday morning devoting one segment to naming the top 10 fantasy players for the upcoming week, but people calling in saying, "Should I start Jamal Lewis or Clinton Portis," would be horrible radio. As far as the gambling 'experts' as guests, I think that some of the hosts are customers, explaining the fascination. I hate that crap when Lance goes in to a long speech about a point spread instead of the X's and O's. I mean, I think Lance believes that if a team doesn't cover, they should be given a loss because that seems to be all he cares about. It isn't just Lance, I just hate the gambling addicts that can't watch a game without worrying about the spread. I am there talking about a team's defense and celebrating a win and the addict is depressed because the team didn't cover.
I think you're wrong. Gambling runs the NFL...there's a reason the NFL forces teams to release the injured list on Wednesdays. And a fantasy segment on Friday mornings couldn't possibly be as bad as that horrible Dick Harmon golf show they used to have.
Of course, these guys don't have every answer, but they are able to give you pretty accurate picks based on tons of research. There's always luck involved in sports betting, but you can cut down on that luck with good research.
If you're listening to 610 at 5-7AM or whenever on a Saturday and NOT going fishing, you have issues.
Good post. Sounds like an excellent way to get them on without forcing guys like Rich and Charlie who hate that crap to sit through an hour with Phil Steel while he reels off the over/under. I heard Charlie come back from a break in which there were three separate gambling ads run and say, "Now, we wash our hands of that and move on to the real sports...[pause]..." right into a "live" ad for China Garden.
In the 70's, my dad worked with all those guys. He used to do sports and outdoors every morning on KXYZ from early morning through during drive time. They were the other all news station (to KTRH) with the odd exception of blues overnight. This was the 70's afterall, when the radio business was a LOT different. He used to work with Bob Stevenson and others on those things doing fishing reports, etc. Then, he'd do the regular sports stuff during standard drive time hours. Here's the funniest part - the guy that did all the news was Jon Matthews - yeah, the same ultra-conservative talk show guy that used to be on 97 rock with Moby and who was recently busted for indecency with a child. The guy was a chain-smoking jerk back then too.
Good stuff. This paragraph pretty much mirrors how I feel about all this. I like Lance but he does tend to talk about the spread as if it's more important than the final score. BTW, thanks for paying attention to our rants Chance. Good to know that you guys care about what your listeners have to say. Yet another reason 610 is LOCKED on my car radio 24/7. And yes...the Dick Harmon golf hour was brutal.
