What concerns me is that maybe Howard and Green just aren’t very good, but they are starting because of where they were drafted and what the expectations are. The offensive line we cobbled together last season seemed to perform as well or maybe better than what we have seen this year. It’s early in the season, so there is time to improve. But, it’s important to win these early games as our schedule doesn’t get any easier later in the season.
Tytus is our highest graded lineman overall (run+pass) one penalty one sack. He's having some communication issues with Mason and Scruggs with blitz and pre snap alignments. Tunsil on the other hand is our best pass blocker and probably the best pass blocking LT in the league. His grade is 8 points lower than Tytus overall. 10 penalties and two sacks. I think everyone knows by now that run blocking is not his cup of tea. Not really a flex on Tytus just my subjective observation based on PFF.
Man I’m gonna give Scruggs and Green a pass this year since they’re young and basically redshirts. Mason is a flop and I think he should maybe be replaced by Kendrick Green at some point if his play keeps being bad. Tytus needs to layoff the social media this year and focus. Dude might have been drunk on the hype. If he shows no improvement going forward then put in Blake. Tunsil is the most frustrating of them all. Seth Payne said it best this morning. Dude has all the tools to be a HOF tackle, to get that yellow jacket but he only does just enough to get paid. He doesn’t do the little things that separate the really good players from Hall of Famers. Seth brought up his run blocking. Thnsil knows where to go but doesn’t finish hard.
I have to see it to believe it. If it was that easy to "address" why didn't they do it before the season
Demeco did say after the game that Tunsil knows where to line up. Addressing it may be as simple as telling Tunsil to stop lining up a step behind the center’s waist. We’ll soon see if Tunsil was paying attention and whether he can execute. It's pathetic that, despite being told before the season that this would be a point of emphasis, he continues to do it, was flagged multiple times and still lined up incorrectly. Hopefully, it will be fixed
Was someone on defense flagged for a hip-drop tackle and continued doing it? When asked a question about hip drop tackle, did Demeco reply so and so on defense knows how to tackle? What does that have to do with Tunsil?
Just doesn’t make sense. Higher end of clean pocket but still getting sacked. Receivers are getting separation from these stats too. What’s the disconnect
Guys are just off rhythm all over the offense. Slowik has shown some really great concepts and ways to get guys involved, but far too often chunk plays are being called back. Interior pressure is an issue. Reading more about defenses using better 'space' players to mitigate the Shanny WCO. Personally we should be spamming the living hell out of play action to Nico. Joe Mixon getting healthy and holding the defense honest will be a help as he offers more vision in the ZBS than either Akers or DP who I feel are better gap runners. Elephant in the room is that CJ needs to play better himself. I dont want to be 'that guy' in bringing up DC's with tape, but teams are taking away some of our tendencies. Need our guys to get in the lab and trot out some new wrinkles starting this week.
I think once the Texans pick up some hardnose bulldog OL players that can change the attitude of the young linemen, they'll be rolling. We have too many soft OL players that gives up penalties, gives up on plays, and no sense of dog in them to finish a defender. Yah I'm pointing at Tunsil and Howard. Haven't paid attention to Mason since I'm constantly being disappointed in the bookend tackles.
I think that is primarily why they drafted Fisher so high, to be groomed to take over LT (Tunsil’s BS is running thin). Everyone knows that piss poor attitude from Tunsil brings downs the chemistry. But Tunsil is an elite LT, albeit with a horrible attitude and demeanor, so you can’t just trade him away! So they need to prepare him and coach him to take over as soon as next season.
I see Tunsil as the James Harden of the current Texans. He has to go. He's not the type of competitor needed for the team culture. Trade him first chance you get. Addition by subtraction.
