Storm is projected to move N/NW then W as it hits Tennessee. From there, it's expected to loop around Nashville and head east. This isn't looking good for Tennessee. I was really hoping we would avoid a FL hit this year for insurance purposes.
houston got pretty lucky a cool front is coming down this way because Helene was definitely going toward Galveston/Houston zone.
This coming from Galveston is what caused the mother of all traffic jams for Rita in 2005, 19 years ago yesterday. Everyone I knew who got out before the amberlampses made it to wherever they were going in a slow but decent timeframe. Everyone who ****ed around and left after found out and was stuck for 20 hours.
Hurricane Helene strengthens, expected to be Category 4 with 15-20 foot storm surge https://www.wesh.com/article/hurricane-helene-florida-2024-latest-update/62358894
What people don’t realize is that a storm of this size will push the surge really far from the landfall area.
Correct…we’re outside of the window. We have humidity and mosquitos but the people and the food are amazing…and we don’t get hurricanes past about 9/20….also Go ‘stros!
Parts of North Carolina already have some high water issues because of recent rain and won't have much time to dry out. Getting some rain from Helene is going to hurt North Carolina in addition to the other states in the Southeast. Roxboro is Northwest of Durham - Raleigh and near the border with Virginia. Flooding, road conditions in Roxboro area close schools in Person County Wednesday PERSON COUNTY, N.C. (WNCN) – Drivers in Person County are navigating around road closures due to flooding and even sinkholes emerging in the Roxboro area. As a result of the overnight flooding, the Person County School District announced that classes are canceled on Wednesday due to the road closures. “Parts of the city are flooded,” Roxboro police said in a post online just after 7:15 a.m. “Please be aware and make arrangements to circumvent areas. The Boulevard between Barden Street and Long Avenue remain closed.” School leaders said the closure stems from possible hazardous road conditions as midweek storms barreled through central North Carolina. Person County Schools is closed for the day for students, but staff members will report on a two-hour delay.
Helene is looking like it’s going to be a pretty bad storm. Hoping for the best for the people in the path.
I never left or even thought about it. I was living in the inner loop why would I leave? Also it seemed like a solid chance to push north
Yep, I stayed because I was living on the NW side at the time. People were scared shitless because it was the same year as Katrina - part of that insane 2005 season where we literally ran out of names. I remember driving from Cypress to Katy [insert evacuation joke here] after everyone had left town and it was surreal. All the freeways were totally empty except for a bunch of stalled cars that people had just left. It looked like something from Walking Dead.
Not really. A lot of models had it pushing east/north and there was a lot of inconsistency there. But yes, the ones predicting things to go upwards should have either been more vocal in their projections or people should have kept the degree of error in spaghetti plots in mind when it came to that. In this scenario, from the second the storm devleoped, zero models were concerning for a westward trend or it tracking towards Texas. Same thing with the other storm that recently went east of LC. And yes, the cooler weather is why this happens this time of year… and why there hasn’t been an event here in late September ever.
