Cheap owner was too cheap to pay for the new gym after seeing the cost of just building the entry stairs. Instead, he made them cram everything into that old warehouse. Not only that, but the handicap ramp is way too steep for wheelchairs. Tilman hates the disabled!

The new facility looks fantastic. Even having built-in old-school hill-running HOF NFL players would do, will definitely help attract and retain talent.

Alright, build the statue of Fertitta outside the facility. Championship confirmed.

Massive upgrade but still feels and seems dark on the practice courts just like the old one but again still a massive upgrade.

    https://www.houstonchronicle.com/sp...memorial-hermann-tilman-fertitta-19770641.php

That was part of the plan when the Rockets resisted an urge to bring in veterans while putting up the worst three-year record in the NBA. Fertitta said he often considered changing the plan, only to have his son Patrick and general manager Rafael Stone convince him to stay the course.

“We decided, when we got knocked out by the Lakers (in the second round of the 2020 playoffs), we had no more assets,” Fertitta said. “We had traded away everything. My first few years, I didn’t know what the draft was because we never had any draft picks. But it was time to pull the plan. Patrick and Raf came to me and said, ‘We can go to NBA purgatory, which is seed seven, eight or nine with no shot of even getting to the second round, or we can do this the right way.’

“You look at the seven (drafted) guys we have from the last three years, it’s unbelievable, mixed in with some great veterans. We decided to do something that’s going to pay off for the next 12 years.”

Fertitta said he wanted the facility to be convenient for players, coaches, sponsors, media and, “most of all,” him. He said he had attended just one practice at Toyota Center since buying the franchise in 2017. He used his Toyota Center office only to go to the bathroom.

In the new facility, he and Patrick have offices adjacent to the court, with the entire basketball operations department in the offices surrounding theirs and the coaches’ offices between theirs and the Rockets' locker room. Most of the facility was built to surround the courts, with meeting rooms in back, next to the locker room, and training, medical, weight and dining rooms on the side opposite the offices.

“It all surrounds the basketball courts,” Rockets president of business operations Gretchen Sheirr said, “because basketball is still the center of everything we do.”

There is even a locker room on the side of the building removed from the Rockets’ facilities with a separate entrance for visiting teams. Sheirr said every other basketball department room is within 20 steps of the courts.
