Not interested at all but this could be a profitable investment for Tillman if Caitlin Clark's popularity lifts up the entire WNBA.
It's not a terrible play to get in at Phase 2 of the league, but the road is still a long one. Phase one lasted 30 years. USA basketball was fighting Caitlyn, their biggest cash cow, just one month ago. So really, it just pointed out that the WNBA isn't ready for the big time. It's typical. We've seen it before. Leagues just need time to gain a permanent fan base so they get the ad revenue. The Truth is, Women need to go to the games. That's the pocket. So let's say you get a lot of young girls excited this year, which Caitlyn did, you are still looking at 15 years before they have disposable income to spend on the league.
I'd love to go to Comets games! I bet they're way more affordable too. Even if they're not, I would love to have a Houston basketball team to root for in the offseason. A lot of you guys just assume we're all watching other sports. I'm not. I literally stop watching sports the second the Rockets season is over. If the Rockets don't make the playoffs. I don't watch the playoffs. Then I get a few Summer League games. Then I have to wait until preseason. It's brutal.
As a former Comets life long STH, I would love to watch the Houston Comets again. But at my senior age now, going to every game as we did the last time is out of the question. We were STHs of both the Rockets and Comets, but the most fan fun comes from the WNBA games not the NBA game. Do it Tillman, bring the Comets back. Hopefully "the Dancing Comet" fan would return. He was lots of fun. I would go to a few Comet games like I do the Rockets.
It is wild that the Houston Comets were the original dynasty of the WNBA and by the time the WNBA really starts to make some headway, the Comets no longer exist. I'm guessing they have done plenty of market research on this and other cities are likely in front of Houston for the WNBA.
I don't care about either they are both minor league sports but it is always good to have as many options as possible. I have been to a Comets game in the 90s that was entertaining. Cooper was a great personality and Swoops was thought to be the best player at the time. Hockey is fun in person but I would never spent 10 minutes watching either on TV nor go unless it was free
So Houston Comets defeated NY Liberty 3x in the finals. Add that to the Astros and Rockets... Houston tends to torment NY sportswise.
WNBA also places teams where there is no NBA team. Having a team in Austin makes a lot of sense since the season is offset from college ball, especially if UT has players in the league.
wNBA lost $40M this season, which was also it's most popular. Without the NBA the league would fold in 1-2 seasons. It would be throwing away money.
This is the man that was crying on TV during the pandemic acting like he was going to starve. Look at him now.
There should be a law against owning a Houston pro team and then buying a second pro team that competes against a Houston pro team. This man is trying to corner the Gulf Coast.
