I hope you are not serious… certain fields attract certain groups of people… there are fields full of left socialist types (social workers and education)…. But law enforcement definitely attracts lots of far right authoritarian types… When I first became an attorney, I did not expect it to be overwhelmingly the case… 20 years later, and knowing and having deposed probably 1,500 law enforcement officers - I can confidently say that the stereotype is often true. I can also sadly say that the blue shield is definitely true.. there are a lot of officers that cover for other officers.

No - not all PD are bad. There are some officers that are great people doing a hard job… but there are also many that are ethically challenged after time on the force.

So? Many minority police officers have extreme political opinions and authoritarian. The blue shield extends to all types of officers. The group I have noticed is least likely to “protect other officers” is oddly white women. I would say it’s happenstance but I have deposed a massive numbers of officers… many will lie even when there is video showing they are lying.

One of the most interesting stories out of the death of George Floyd was LEO Alexander Keung. He was the black rookie officer who was holding down George Floyd’s legs. He had entered the force out of a desire to change the police culture and the impression of police. Instead he ended up following his superior into the worst abuse of authority this century.

Did he even die from that (Floyd)?

Good (about the topic), if they were trained by the left, it would be the softest police in the world.

As it happens I’ve trained LEO including some who went on to MPD.

It is very difficult to go into a culture that is as strong and pervasive as LEO - and not be influenced by it... this is especially true in high pressure situations.

It is a profession where someone can be changed after being exposed to the culture, stress and power that comes with the job. I really would not encourage my family to become an LEO or the military.

Just from personal experience of people I know who became LEOs before they BECAME LEOs. They were either asholes who you knew would be terrible cops because they just wanted power or they were the nicest people ever. There was no in-between.

Unfortunately - some of the ones that are the nicest people change due to the level of power, corruption, stress, PTSD and culture that exists.

The philosophy in police departments is not to be helpful - it is self-preservation at all costs. You couple that with some people being jerks on purpose to LEO and the inherent risk of violence (which is over played) - and it is a powder keg. Some can handle it - some cannot.

The only thing that has really changed is that it is harder to get away with it now because of cell phone videos, surveillance cameras and body cams. Before all they had to do was recite the standing order on police shootings, claim they followed the guidelines and the DA would not prosecute. Now - what happens is that they don't turn on their body cameras - and if they do get turned on, they don't turn on the volume - and if both are or, they just tell a story that is the complete opposite of what is seen in the camera footage - all after talking to a higher ranking officer, a commander, a union representative and a Union lawyer - then they refuse to give a statement. Then they may give a statement to COPA a month later, after being prepared and represented by counsel.

More LEO get caught now - but a surprising number get away with it, and the courts and LEO agencies do not release the footage - they offer money to get the family to sign a confidentiality agreement and everything goes away.

Yeah I guess - but in Chicago, minority officers are as likely to shoot civilians as white officers.

If it was as simple as race - Chicago would just hire all minority officers.

    Diabolical.

Hmm, I wonder why police unions are the only union Cons will support.

Because police unions compromise people who are most effective at stopping the other unions when they get uppity.

Hence the irony of police wanting unions. The weapon(law enforcement) against union organizing and striking don't deserve their own unions. Law enforcement officers crying about their right to unionize while they are the front line warriors against labor unions organizing in impactful ways is incredibly ironic.

In most departments it is a violation to not turn on their camera when there is an engagement - but in some cases there is a 30 second drag from when the camera is "pushed on" and when it starts to record. Often times the wording of the statutes or police is ambiguous enough that an officer can make an argument defending why the camera was not turned on.... plus, usually it is a one day suspension or a fine for failure to turn the camera on during an altercation.

I watch quite a bit of cop shows and I like watching First Amendment auditors and one thing I see a lot of is the cops not having their cameras on "at just the right moment", why can't the cameras stay on all the time and you can't shut them off, if they can turn on and off a their whim the bad ones will do that to hide what they're doing. I get there may be some sensitive conversations or something as simple as going to the bathroom but there has to be a way............................

Just think how much police officers could get paid if they didn’t waste money on settlements. I’d like to look over a study of that and the math.
