I feel his point applies to almost all music today. The whole right side of his chart "conceptually interesting" is really hard to do because it's all been done before. "Formally interesting" should be easier, but their seems to be a copy culture where once a thing hits everyone duplicates it. So everything is stuck in the formally and conceptually boring camp. I would argue pop is way worse than rock right now. Also, we can listen to music from any time in history. People of all ages would rather listen to good old music than new crap. I'm always amazed how many kids know all the lyrics to songs from the 70s and 80s.
The computerization of music is a big problem. You have a dead simple melody on a synth with a drum machine beat and an auto-tuned singer. Even back to the 50s bands many times didn't play their instruments on the records. The session musicians were really good and added a lot to the music. If current bands would create on the computer and finish with session musician the final product would be so much better.
Rock hasn't been something they put on mainstream TV in like 30 years but the kids DO seem to like the indie flavor of rock, you'll find bands like Snail Mail and Soccer Mommy covering Pavement, Smashing Pumpkins, Elliot Smith. With that said, that Chappell Roan? NOTHING BUT BANGERS. And whoever TEDDY SWIMS is - **** yall. Tattoos on your face? Grow up.
If you find a couple of radio stations, terrestrial or satellite, you can hear new good music. It exists, it just takes a little work to actually hear.
There are LOADS of alternative and indie bands that are really good these days. Shocked that there aren't more in the top stinking 400 artists on Spotify, and that a group like Ritchy Mitch & The Coalminers (who I had never heard of) is. I'm sure there are lot of old bands and solo artists that justifiably belong on the list, but damn...
As far as pop music Michael Jackson Prince and Madonna seems leaps and bounds more interesting than anything I can recall today.
These guys play great music with minimal commercials, all around the Hill Country. There's different stations in different counties/regions. https://www.sunradio.com/solar-powered-sun-radio/
I would love them. Their recent playlist is mostly stuff I listen to all the time. Love the variety too.
Ummm no I didn’t. As far as song writing structure of a pop artist vs the Beatles… no there’s no difference. The difference as I noted later was the ability for each Beatles members to create two dozen more great pop songs in one year than each than someone like Olivia Rodrigo can write in 10 with the ability to do creative and interesting things with that pop song. Plus you did have the fact that as co producers each other other 4 members of the Beatles could contribute 10x more than any modern producer could…. But the structure is similar as a solo artist bringing songs to a producer. So no…. Not what I was saying at all. Creating a great pop song is hard enough as it is but it’s achievable as I noted with many of these modern pop artists which do… to their credit… produce. Being able to do what the Beatles did to created that many pop songs in such a short period of time and then do really freaking interesting things with them is unheard of and might never happen again.
Surprised there's not a thread about him! Indian. From Houston. Rapper. Thats practically all of clutchfans.
There are great bands and singers its just not in your face all the time like it was in the 80's and 90's. For the artist its easier than ever to put music out but its also the downside because there is so much out there its impossible for most artist to stick out and make a name for themselves
