I'm gonna be the bad guy here.

It annoyed me that ESPN would not allow anyone else working for them to break huge NBA news. It was always funneled to Woj. Only after Woj reported could others comment. IIRC, it wasn't that way when he first started at ESPN.

For the record, I like Woj and admired his relentless grind for so many years.

I think some of that was quality control. You don't want a bunch of these other reporters degrading the value of the scoop by having to constantly correct themselves.

Woj maintained quality sources for years and he had brand recognition.

Should have been a team instead of Woj alone, one man is easily burned out.

Yup, should have allowed others to break too. ESPN didn't want to be outshined by Athletic's Shams.

Reporters and their race to be the first to break news. They kinda bought all that pressure on themselves.

Hey...I'm willing to joke about Burt Steele as an insider, but NEVER mention him in the same sentence as Ch44.

Timing is interesting. Stephen A Smith's reportedly turned down ESPN's $18m extension for a reportedly higher raise: $23-$25m. (TBD)

Woj is walking away from $20m-ish. Theoretically ESPN can funnel some of that savings to keep S.A.S. Yes i'm sure to some CFers' dismay. :D

If they give SAS the raise, that pushes up the ceiling. Pat McAfee is at $17m/per ($85 for 5 years). Down the road, McAfee or SAS's next contract might even be higher.

... ESPN went through a round of laid off last year.
