I saw Peter Frampton open for John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra in early April, 1973 at the old single screen Santa Rosa Theatre on Telephone Road in southeast Houston (in my old neighborhood). This was still the band with Jerry Goodman on electric violin, Jan Hammer on keyboards, and Billy Cobham on drums (that group broke up in June - I think John fired them all). The place was packed.
