Ohio Haitians Feel Panic, Local Christians Try to Repair Divides - Christianity Today

As Donald Trump’s unfounded claims circulate, Springfield pastors and immigrant leaders deal with the real-world consequences.

Local Ohio church leaders are largely supportive of the Haitian community, which is predominantly Christian, but they are navigating division in their own Christian communities too. Pastors of some of the largest local churches joined meetings, press conferences, and phone calls this week to debunk misconceptions about Haitians and the situation on the ground.

Still, social media and the national news cycle (conservative news outlets ran headlines featuring a resident describing Springfield as a “dystopian nightmare”) have been louder locally than church responses, with a feedback loop that has deepened divisions even within the local Christian community.

Local pastors, in interviews with CT, said the social fabric of the community has been ripped apart, with real-world consequences for locals and immigrant neighbors in their own churches. Some schools and government buildings shuttered on Thursday over unspecified threats, and officials who spoke against the rumors were doxxed online. On Friday, two elementary schools in Springfield were evacuated and another school was closed.

“Words matter,” said Dorsainvil. “What you say can unite people, or it can create great division in a community. This is what we are experiencing now.”

One Haitian who bought a home in Springfield a month ago told Dorsainvil that he was considering leaving. The former pastor counseled him to remain calm, to not make an emotional decision. Dorsainvil admitted that he felt panicked too.

But he added, “We’ve been through a lot from Haiti to here—we are used to situations like this.”

“It’s like a tornado right now, politically and socially,” said Jeremy Hudson, pastor of one of the largest churches in town, Fellowship Church. “We don’t know what direction it’s going to go, what it’s going to take out, what the devastation is going to be.”

He added, “We do know in about five weeks the election is going to be over … and we’re going to be left trying to sew up the tears.”

Calls someone a bigot multiple times. Provides no quotes or evidence of bigotry.

That sums you up as a poster. A shameless and vile human.

No citations to prove your accusation of bigotry. Just your ranting drivel. Nobody cares what a well established liar like yourself who constantly misrepresents other posters thinks about anything.

Not surprising you spend 15 hours a day here. Nobody irl could possibly socialize with you.

Below link is the City of Springfield FAQ on immigration.
    • Trump claims they are illegal, but that’s incorrect. They are here legally under TPS (Temporary Protected Status).
    • Vance says there are 20,000 Haitian immigrants in Springfield, and Trump inflated that number to 32,000. Both are wrong—the actual number for all of Clark County is between 12,000 and 15,000, so the number for Springfield is even lower.
    • They implied that these immigrants don’t work and are a drain on social services. This is misleading. Not only are they working, and noted by locals as great workers, but the challenges to services are due to the rapid population growth—a problem that can be managed and is preferable to a city in decline.
    • Vance also said they are vectors of disease. I’m not even going to bother fact-checking this racist, Nazi-like comment from him.

'Morally sick': Ex-Southern Baptist leader condemns Trump and Vance's lies

Former Southern Baptist leader Russell Moore sees "the devil at play" in Donald Trump and J.D. Vance's stories about Haitian immigrants in Ohio.

Both candidates on the Republican presidential ticket have spread false claims about migrants stealing and eating pets in Springfield, Ohio, which has resulted in bomb threats made to government buildings and schools. Moore condemned their morals on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

"This is part of the moral sickness that we see around us right now," said Moore, a former high-ranking official in the Southern Baptist Convention. "I think there is some good news on the ground in Springfield. Christianity Today did a report in Springfield about what churches and pastors are doing. There is not the kind of demonizing of Haitian migrants there locally, but it's coming in from the outside and it's coming in all over social media.

"This is going to get people hurt. We have children who are sheltered in place, scared."

On CNN Sunday, Vance admitted the claims were untrue but defended them by saying they were necessary to alert the media to tension in the town. But Moore rejected that argument and said the accusations are far worse than what the the vice presidential candidate calls "cat memes."

    ...

Moore lamented that many evangelicals still back Trump and his running mate, but he felt they had been consuming inaccurate information.

"I think there are some people who are confused by the kind of misinformation, disinformation that rockets around the place right now," Moore said. "And for those people, we need to simply talk about what's actually happening and how these words can be dangerous.

"But I'm less worried about the political ramifications of this than I am this ongoing cycle of demonizing one group after the other. That just can't keep going like this, we can't keep living like this as a society — something has got to give."

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine says baseless claims about Haitian immigrants are 'garbage'
DeWine, a Republican, stopped short of condemning the former president and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance, for amplifying the false rumors.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine on Sunday decried former President Donald Trump's baseless claims that Haitian immigrants in Springfield were eating dogs and other pets as "garbage" but stopped short of directly condemning Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance, for spreading the false claims.

“There’s a lot of garbage on the internet. You know, this is a piece of garbage that was simply not true. There’s no evidence of this at all,” DeWine said in an interview on ABC’s “This Week” when he was asked whether it’s responsible for Trump to push the false claims.

Asked what he would say to Trump after he pointed out that there is no truth to his claims, DeWine condemned groups that have marched in Springfield as part of a hate campaign against Haitian immigrants and went on to praise Haitians as hard-working people who have brought “positive influences” to the town.

“Hate groups coming into Springfield, we don’t need these hate groups,” he said. “I saw a piece of literature yesterday that the mayor told me about from purportedly the KKK [Ku Klux Klan]. Springfield is a good city. They are good people. They’re welcoming people. We have challenges every day. We’re working on those challenges.

“Haitians are — culturally, my wife, Fran, and I have seen this when we’ve been down in Haiti — education is prized,” he added. “So when you look at all of these things, people who want to work, people who value their kids, who value education, you know, these are positive influences on our community in Springfield, and any comment about that otherwise, I think, is hurtful and is not helpful to the city of Springfield and the people of Springfield.”

Recent bomb threats in Springfield prompted closings of schools and municipal buildings last week amid widespread scrutiny the town faces over false rumors of Haitian migrants stealing and eating household pets.

Pressed about whether there is a connection between the bomb threats and the baseless claims Trump and Vance are spreading online, DeWine called for discussions about the claims to stop but did not directly criticize Trump or Vance for amplifying the right-wing conspiracy theories.

“I think these discussions about Haitians eating dogs and cats and other things needs to stop,” he said. “We need to focus on what is important. What is important is that we get primary care health to everyone in a very growing city, that we do other things in regard to housing. These are kind of basic things that we need to do. We need to focus on those and not these.”

DeWine noted that many of the Haitian immigrants in Springfield went there legally under federal programs as refugees who fled political turmoil in their country and said they have helped boost the state’s economy as workers.

“This discussion about Haitians’ eating dogs is just not helpful,” he said. “And again, these people are here legally. They’re here legally, and they want to work, and they are, in fact, working. And when you talk to the employers, what the employers tell you is, you know, we don’t know what we would do without them. They are working, and they’re working very hard.”

DeWine, however, stood by his endorsement of Trump when he was asked about whether his support has softened in light of his false claims.

“I’ve said before we knew who the nominee was going to be I would support the Republican nominee for president,” he said. “I am a Republican. I think if you look at the economy issues, and these are issues that I think the American people are most concerned about, I think that Donald Trump is the best choice.”

Trump pushed the baseless claim about Haitian immigrants during the presidential debate against Vice President Kamala Harris last week, arguing that Springfield is an example of the detrimental effects of immigration as a result of Harris’ immigration policies.

Springfield Mayor Rob Rue has slammed the false claims and urged the public, especially prominent public figures, not to amplify them further.

“Springfield is a beautiful community, and your pets are safe in Springfield, Ohio,” Rue said on MSNBC’s “Katy Tur Reports” last week. “We’ve made that known publicly, and we’re asking people to understand and believe the reports that we’re sharing with them.

“We need those that have a national stage that have a mic, with millions and millions [of followers], we need them to understand what their words are doing to cities like Springfield, Ohio,” he added. “What we need is help. We don’t need this misinformation.”

Good for them. I like how they ended the statement by writing: “ansanm nou kanpé fò”, or “together we stand strong” in Haitian creole.

Miami has a large Haitian community, many of them based in the neighbourhood of Little Haiti.

There are also quite a few Haitian employees at a couple of the country clubs I frequent. They are hard-working and polite.
