...are the opposite of your own?

And how do you deal with it?

I would say that probably at least 60 % or so of my "professional contacts" are Kamala supporters, for various reasons.

I know a lot of people in tech and healthcare - specifically women in healthcare leadership roles - and I think among them, it's more like 85 % pro Kamala. Hundreds of them just put out a jointly signed endorsement of Kamala on LinkedIn, etc.

And I understand why they find Trump distasteful, especially from a woman's perspective.

In real life, I tend to avoid the types of political discussions I have here in this forum - partly because I am probably usually a bit more polite in real life, and partly because I run a business and do not want the business to suffer because someone would not like my political views.

So I guess this forum is a bit of an outlet, but at the same time also a way to "hear the other side" when they are quite unfiltered (and sometimes aggressive).

How do you deal with it? I think I read that quite a few of you leftists have "MAGA" relatives, and how it bothers you.

Are you as "outspoken" in real life as you are here?

Is this an attempt to pretend you are sincere?

I work in an industrial field. I'm surrounded by union members who support republicans. Yeah, don't ask me.

The best policy is to cut religion and political conversations completely out of work. However, if something particular outlandish and utterly false is muttered around me, I've found that very calmly challenging the person completely nullifies the situation. Like I said, these are republicans that are in a union, so these people can't back up their arguments with actual facts.

You don’t talk politics or religion with people you don’t know extremely well. If there is mutual respect then the conversation can be civil and mature.

Shift conversations to business, sports, food or the weather.

Yes - I work with and have clients with Trump supporters. The high end “elites” in my field are almost always very liberal or at least very socially liberal.

I listen a lot - and am very hard to offend. I find very conservative people usually are receptive if I challenge their beliefs or statements. I also try to not be dismissive and listen and consider their perspective.

As for the super liberal elites I meet, I tend to discuss politics less with them unless I know them well. They are usually very informed on the topics but also tend to take my challenges more personal.

I will speak up against conservatives when I see misogyny. I step in and stop it the first time it happens and discuss it in private later… second time I correct it and embarrass them. Third time I take punitive action if they are my equal or below… if they are above me it is usually an argument in front of everyone.

I hear horrible things from men - if it is in a truely private situation I let it go. I am a big believer in separation of public and private.

I cannot support Trump. He simply isn’t fit for the job. I have concerns over some of Harris’ policies but I do over Trump as well - and I know Harris cares more about America than Trump does.

My hope is that we get better candidates in the future. The public doesn’t seem to care though.

    This.

I’ve found that the very ‘elite’ successful types in life are usually liberal or socially liberal. It takes that live and let live hands-off attitude to delegate well. Good delegation means you can lead and grow. In business that means you grow and prosper.

Most angry conservatives are busybody micromanagers by nature; how else would they be up in everyone else’s business and try to control every aspect of their lives to fit their own ideals of ‘normal’?

There are outliers, of course. Strong personalities can bend the will of their subordinates and prosper financially. But at home, their **** is in disarray. Pillow Guy and Vince McMahon are good examples.

    Strong lesson here.

I mostly talk and vent politics here so I don't have to do it elsewhere.

It's true that libs take things more personally with politics. Sometimes older cons will talk about it nonstop when they think you're a receptive ear.

Conservatives are very set in their views. You won't shift their opinions, they will always counter. Same with liberals as well. The best approach - don't talk about politics. It's a useless conversation. If you challenge someone's beliefs, you won't change their mind. You won't make a better relationship. You can only go downhill.

Outside of a handful of people, I've pretty much got my entire circle of family and friends trained to not talk politics around me.

I've walked in the house to 15 or so relatives sitting around a table after some holiday meal and immediately heard "[he's] here, better change the subject".

75% moderate. 15% right. 10% left. This is just an estimate.

The moderates are much more pragmatic in their thinking where the remainder are straight ticket voters. Of the couple moderates who are pro-harris, (not to be confused with anti-trump) they dont follow politics and know very little about Harris and are falling for her empathetic nonsense she is pushing. None of the moderates are pro-trump and most of them dislike harris more.

It depends. I have plenty of practice. I wouldn’t engage with someone I don’t know; there has to be some relationship and/or trust. It’s almost always 1-on-1; I rarely talk politics in large groups. I also code-switch. If they’re MAGA, I let them be (they’d think I’m MAGA and yap nonstop). If they’re moderate conservative, I challenge them all the time (they know I’m right and they’re wrong :p). If they’re moderate liberal, I laugh with them at times and play the other side occasionally, which sometimes pisses them off. If they’re very sensitive (or extreme) liberal, I avoid that conversation, but occasionally, I drop in some facts carefully.

People in this thread are actually having a discussion and statements like this bring nothing to the table.

Most of my family voted Republican until Trump came along. No one in my extended family can stand Trump, so now they vote 100% for Democrats. They are bewildered how the Republican Party has become the Trump party. They also can’t understand how someone can call themselves a Christian and then vote for someone like Trump. If the Republicans could get rid of Trump, I suspect some of my relatives would probably consider voting for some Republicans once again.

If I suspect someone is a MAGA person, I won’t bring up politics at all. What’s the use, they are all super committed to Trump.
