If Astros go 11-10 Mariners must go 15-5 and win at least 1 vs Astros Rangers are eliminated even if they don't lose another game. If Astros go 11-10 including 2 of 3 vs Mariners. The Mariners must go 14-3 in their remaining 17 games.
4.5 ahead of the mariners for the division. 4.5 behind the guardians for the 1st round bye Guardians are playing the White Sox....
This is for @Wulaw Horn. Tell Andrew, the reason the 1 game in the loss column instead of the win column is important, its because, in a vacuum if both teams win out (impossible w/ 3 vs each other) the Astros still have a better record. If the 1 game is in the win column and both teams win out, they are tied. Andrew is missing this basic concept. He keeps saying both teams play the same amount of games so it doesn't matter, but once a game is over it's over and can no longer be considered an opportunity to control their own destiny.
I have heard it, lol And I'm sure you have tried when not recording as well. It sounded on the podcast, like your explanations were getting more complex and confusing with every attempt. I'm sure it's just from trying to find a diffent way hoping something clicks.
The Loss column is an over-exaggerated theory because *both* columns matter. Which team would you rather be... a) 80-62 b) 78-61 or a) 82-62 b) 80-62 Once a game is played, it's a loss or WIN. Both columns matter. Controlling your own destiny comes into play (either record) if there are H2H matchups remaining.
Your 2nd scenario makes no sense because both have the same number of losses, of course you want more wins. In the first scenario it's very close because the first team has 2 wins in the bank. However, if both teams win out, the 2nd team still wins the division so the first team must rely on team 2 to lose at least 1 game ( 2 if they don't have the tiebreaker) so they don't control their own destiny unless there are head to head games left. 2nd team still controls their own destiny regardless.
Yep! Once we get 3 back from Cleveland in the loss column we will control our own destiny. With the extra game in hand on Anaheim I don't think of us as 4.5 up I think of us as 5 up if we take care of business. Since tie's aren't broken anymore and any tie would obviously see Seattle with the tie breaker (we aren't tying them if we sweep them) that extra game we control is big because a tie is a loss for us.
