I would speculate something like this. His reps asked for permission to speak to other teams on his behalf as part of negotiations and the Rams agreed. This is actually an attempt to discover the market value when there might be a disagreement on that value.

Different players and teams view this differently, but it is different than asking for a trade because you have become unsatisfied in the locker room or with the team or city. It falls into the category of being just business.
